EDGE integrates new real-time tumor tracking in end-to-end system for performing radiosurgery
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Earlier this year, Varian Medical Systems received FDA 510(k) clearance for the EDGE™ Radiosurgery Suite, a dedicated system for performing advanced radiosurgery using innovative real-time tumor tracking and motion management technologies.
"We designed the EDGE suite to facilitate fast, accurate delivery of stereotactic radiosurgery to treat any condition amenable to this type of treatment, including tumors of the lung, prostate, brain, spine, and other indications throughout the body," says Kolleen Kennedy, president of Varian's Oncology Systems business. As a noninvasive option, radiosurgery has been growing steadily over the last decade for the treatment of cancer and other conditions, and predictions are that it will continue to grow as research accrues about the benefits to patients.
The EDGE suite provides an end-to-end solution for planning and delivering radiosurgery treatments. It combines direct, real-time and non-ionizing target tracking, optical surface monitoring, the PerfectPitch™ treatment couch adjustable along six axes of motion, automated patient safety features and industry-leading dose rates. The Edge technology is also available as an upgrade package for the existing installed base of Varian's Clinac® iX and Trilogy® treatment machines.
Clinicians at the Champalimaud Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal, were among the clinical experts who assessed the EDGE suite during its development phase. "We have been researching the viability of using single-fraction and hypofractionated radiosurgery to treat primary and oligo-metastatic lesions," says Carlo Greco, MD, professor of radiation oncology. "It is clear to us that the EDGE platform, with its integrated tumor tracking features, will greatly facilitate these advanced, targeted treatments. It overcomes many of the limitations of other technologies, and will make it possible for image-guided radiosurgery to be more widely available to patients who can benefit."

"It was designed to be uniquely efficient, practical, and versatile. Its biggest advantage is the ability to treat a variety of cases—multiple spine or brain metastases, for example—in a relatively short amount of time. Also, it's a radiosurgery platform that addresses the clinical needs of many surgical specialties, making it a cost effective option for centers whose neurosurgery patient load might not be quite big enough to warrant acquisition of a completely dedicated system. The Edge system is also ideal for treating thoracic, urological, gastrointestinal, and other indications."
