DECC Ranks Number 2082 with Three-Year Sales Growth of 179% on the 2013 Inc. 500/5000 List that Recognizes the Nation’s Fastest Growing Companies
Grand Rapids, MIÂ - For the third time in seven years, The DECC Company, a coating applicator based out of Grand Rapids, MI, has made the Inc. 500/5000 list of the nation’s fastest growing private companies. Coming in at number 2082, DECC posted sales growth of 179% over a three year period and was number 64 out of the top 100 manufacturers on the list.
“We’re excited to make the list again,” says President and owner Fred Mellema, “especially considering where the overall economy has been for the past few years.” Despite the uncertain economy, DECC was able to add 32 new employees over the past three years, a direct result of their sales growth.
Mellema points to the company’s business philosophy as a main contributor to DECC’s success. “We don’t try to be everything to everyone,” he explains. “When a potential customer calls with a coating challenge, if we can’t do it, we will help them find a company that can.” DECC will regularly refer work to their competitors when they know a potential customer can get a better price, as well. “We touch every part we coat, so if a part’s geometry lends itself better to a bulk process like dip-spin, we let our potential customers know that.”
Some have challenged Mellema on his decision to not purchase bulk coating equipment or not quote a job regardless of pricing with hopes of landing one every now and then, which is what the majority of his competitors do. He has a very simple response.
“Because then we would be like everyone else, which is exactly what we don’t want.” He continues, “Our vision is to be the most sought after coating company in North America. You don’t get there by being just as good as everybody else…we strive to be better and I believe we are.”
