The Army Geospatial Center Awarded TAG a Contract for Integration of Its Rugged Tablet with Military Grade Surveying Technology

High-precision military GPS and survey software integrated into TAG's mil-spec rugged tablet will enable real-time use for centimeter-level survey, construction and machine control applications within the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Dulles, Virginia - The Army Geospatial Center (AGC) has recently awarded Technology Advancement Group® (TAG®) a contract to build a Precise Positioning Service (PPS) Global Positioning System (GPS) Surveying System (PGSS) that meets the stringent requirements of Army surveyors deployed in the field. TAG's latest innovation, the TAG Commander(TM), was chosen because of its ability to integrate the technologies required such as wireless communications, GPS, and abundant processing power, thus providing the ideal core for the rugged survey system. Integration of a military GPS receiver providing sub-millimeter precision measurements is another key ingredient to system performance. This integrated system will deliver real-time, on-site positioning with centimeter-level accuracy, using real-time kinematic (RTK) software combining data from a reference station and rover units.

"TAG is excited to work with the Army Corps of Engineers to develop and field a Survey Grade version of our TAG Commander that was custom designed to support our US Military deployed around the world," said Jim McEwan, TAG's CEO. "From our deployable architectures and customer specific designs, to our advanced systems engineering and environmental testing, our goal is to offer world-class engineering expertise in the design and deployment of advanced IT solutions built to survive in the harshest environments."

The TAG Commander has an easy-to-use user interface that is combined with a glove friendly touchscreen and programmable function buttons for ease of operation. In addition, the TAG Commander offers multiple integrated wireless communication technologies. These wireless features combined with the optional ability to plug in a standard Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) card, and integrate technologies such as military GPS and other commercial Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), allow users to remotely monitor critical operating conditions and have access to real-time data being gathered out in the field. This new breed of military grade surveying equipment is manufactured for Technology on the Move(TM).

The TAG Commander's adoption for new commercial machine guidance applications helps improve system accuracy by bringing together innovative guidance software bundled with advanced satellite positioning technology. The unit is equipped with the latest Intel® and Solid-State Drive (SSD) technology, dual hot-swappable batteries, 7" touchscreen display and lightweight aluminum chassis. These technologies enable field technicians and heavy equipment driver's to view, capture and transmit real-time data through interactive 3D imagery and mapping software to improve variable-rate accuracy and simplify resource management. Taking the core hardware from PGSS, this commercial solution can be adapted for any military machine control application.
