SGMA invites Dow Corning to present at new sports technology meeting

MIDLAND, MICHIGAN, USA - The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) has invited Dow Corning Corporation, a leading global innovator in silicone materials for the textile industry, to be part of a small, select group of presenters for its first Sports and Technology Convergence. The event, designed to connect leading sporting good manufacturers with the newest, brightest and best in the technology industry, will take place October 24 through 26, 2006 in La Jolla, California, USA.

Shane Ladwein, Dow Corning's major market strategy leader for fashion textiles, leather and industrial textiles, will present from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 26. He will discuss new developments in fabric technology: an area where sports and science converge to offer exciting opportunities to sportswear manufacturers and marketers.

"Imagine a football jersey or a pair of bicycle shorts that harden instantly on impact to protect better than hard armor, but remain soft, flexible and breathable under normal wear," says Ladwein. "Then imagine being able to customize those items with screen-printing materials that don't crack, peel or feel tacky or stiff. Our scientists at Dow Corning did more than imagine - they proactively came up with real material solutions that accomplish these things."

The Dow Corning® Active Protection System is a patented technology for creating "intelligent" textiles that provide both superior impact protection and comfort. The material remains soft, breathable and flexible under normal conditions, but hardens instantly upon impact. When the impact force is removed, the fabric immediately returns to a flexible state. Independent testing shows that this highly versatile material outperforms typical hard armor systems.

Also new is Dow Corning® 9601 Textile Printing Ink. This innovative product allows manufacturers to capture the full potential of the market for high-quality screen printed apparel with durable, environmentally friendly inks that provide matte and semi-gloss finishes, good elongation, excellent color fastness and a soft, non-tacky handle. As a silicone, 9601 Textile Printing Ink offers a completely non-toxic, user-friendly alternative to conventional inks. Its excellent coverage properties and fast cycle time also make it a cost-effective choice.

"We're pleased and honored to be part of this prestigious inaugural event from SGMA," Ladwein says. "Dow Corning has innovative technologies that can help sporting goods manufacturers differentiate products in many ways - like increased functionality, versatility, performance and protection. The Active Protection System and 9601 Textile Printing Ink are just two examples of how we use proactive, creative thinking to develop silicone solutions that can meet their needs exactly."

His other experience with the company includes positions as manufacturing building and process team leader. Ladwein began his career with Dow Corning as a core business process engineer. He holds a master of business administration from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and a bachelor of science in Chemical Engineering from Michigan Technological University.

SGMA's Sports and Technology Convergence is a unique business-to-business experience for SGMA members and their industry peers in a technology-themed, next-generation environment that cultivates innovative thinking, fosters relationships and stimulates partnership formation. Attendees will learn the latest information about how technology can provide new opportunities to create, distribute, sell and market sports products as well as improve access to and frequency of sport participation.
