Texas Instruments Integrates SRS Labs Virtual Surround Software into PurePath(TM) Studio Tools

TI and SRS Labs Offer Integrated Software Development Environment for Faster Digital Audio Product Creation

DALLAS, Sept. 11 / / -- Accelerating time to market and simplifying software development, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN) today announced that SRS Labs Incorporated (NASDAQ:SRSL) SRS TruSurround HD(TM)/HD4(TM) software for digital audio devices is available in the PurePath(TM) Studio graphical development environment (GDE). TI's comprehensive PurePath Studio GDE is a powerful, easy-to-use tool that works with the TAS3208, the core device in flat-panel digital TV audio systems. The combined technology will increase the availability of high-quality sound in audio systems with a small form factor. For more information see http://www.ti.com/purepathstudiopr.

"With the high performance and precision available with the TAS320x, we are able to focus on implementing algorithms such as SRS TruSurround HD to provide the highest quality audio possible for our customers," said Joanna Skrdlant, senior director of the platform partner program, SRS Labs. "TI makes our advanced technology readily accessible to OEMs who want to create truly differentiated products based on the highest quality audio possible, and they offer it at an attractive price point."

Third Party Tools Enhance Features and Improve Time to Market

TI is working with SRS Labs to include the first collection of add-on tools for PurePath Studio. TI's PurePath Studio software features a GDE where advanced audio process flows can be quickly implemented by simply dragging and dropping software components in place, resulting in not a single line of code having to be written. Additionally, for even higher flexibility, a code editor with contextual help facilities, a simulator for debugging code and other tools are provided as part of the PurePath Studio software suite. The collaboration between TI and SRS Labs provides the ability for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to create consumer audio products employing advanced features, such as virtual surround sound and making small loudspeakers sound big. The availability of pre-made SRS Labs software components in TI's PurePath Studio makes implementation a breeze and significantly reduces time to market.

SRS Labs created function blocks, available for license, that implement its key audio technologies including:

o SRS TruSurround XT(R) for virtual surround sound over two speakers
o SRS TruSurround HD - virtual surround sound over 2.0 - 3.1 speaker
configurations
o SRS TruSurround HD4 - cinema quality virtual surround sound for movies,
music, and television over 4.0 - 5.1 speakers from the front of the
listener - without the clutter of extra surround speakers or wires
o SRS WOW(R), SRS TruBass(R) and SRS Dialog Clarity(TM) to enlarge the
audio image and create deep bass

Consumers will benefit from the increased availability of small and affordable systems with sophisticated algorithms that deliver exceptional sound from just one or two small speakers.

Seamless Support for Popular Processors

This accelerated audio development environment today supports three of TI's popular audio processors: the TAS3208, TAS3204 and TAS3108, which target audio for a range of home entertainment applications including digital TVs, TV accessories and iPod/MP3 docking stations.

"With emerging markets, our single-chip audio processors have to fit into a sliver of space and yet generate sound that will fill the room," said Cecelia Smith, general manager of the Mixed Signal Audio/Video group, TI. "Together both TI and SRS Labs have developed audio technology that offers tremendous performance, analog integration, control and application-specific sound enhancements at a very low price point."

PurePath Studio comes as part of the evaluation module (EVM) available for each of those audio processors. Developers can change operating parameters, such as volume or frequency response, with on-screen controls and immediately hear the results. When satisfied with a design, users make one menu selection to create a file to burn into an Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) for a commercial product. Target hardware using these devices can be reused for a variety of audio products thanks to easy customization through software modifications. For advanced users who like to fine-tune or customize the code, the environment also includes an assembler, simulator and debugger.
