PHY meets all the requirements for practical deployments, enabling use of Teranetics PHY in 'unified Ethernet fabric' server, storage and switching applications
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 27 // -- Teranetics Inc., a leading provider of high performance Ethernet solutions, today announced the demonstration of the industry's only 10GBASE-T Copper PHY that betters the IEEE 802.3an latency specification. The TN1010 PHY is being demonstrated at the UNH 10G Tech Summit this week. The tests performed at UNH include the Spirent Testcenter(TM) measurements that show the TN1010 PHY latency to be lower than the spec, making it the only PHY in the industry to fully comply with the IEEE standard. The demonstration includes 10GBASE-T operation over 100 meter CAT6A cable in 6-around-1 cable configuration.
The 802.3an standard, or 10GBASE-T, comprises many aspects that assure interoperability, performance and ease-of-use. Teranetics has continued to lead the charge to bring to market a solution that not only meets the specification but includes the features and functionality that will make networking products using 10GBASE-T successful. Such features include multi-rate support that allows "any RJ-45 port" connectivity intrinsic to the BASE-T use model, as well as low power of operation. Today, Teranetics showed yet another differentiating feature of their technology as it demonstrated PHY latency of less than 2.5usec, bettering the requirement of the IEEE specification. Lower latency enables the use of 10GBASE-T in a broader set of applications such as high-performance computing and storage and makes further strides toward the promise of a "unified fabric" in next generation data centers.
"The need for a viable, low cost 10G connectivity is increasing with advances in raw processor speed, new server virtualization technology and ever increasing storage demands," said Jag Bolaria of the Linley Group, "Combining 10G speed, low cost and ease-of-use of BASE-T, and a low-latency PHY such as the Teranetics TN1010, Ethernet is evolving to become a viable solution for the unified fabric within the data center."
The 10 Gb/s Standard
Ratified by the IEEE in June 2006, 10GBASE-T (IEEE 802.3an) defines the transmission of 10Gbps Ethernet over UTP copper cabling. As with previous speed generations of Ethernet technology, the creation of the copper standard lowers the cost of 10Gbps network links below that of optical technologies and further accelerates the adoption of 10-Gigabit Ethernet into network infrastructures. The Teranetics TN1010 PHY further simplifies adoption of 10-Gigabit Ethernet due to its ability to connect to existing 1-Gigabit ports via its industry standard 10G/1G auto-negotiation feature.
