TWSCO Motivates Employees

One gases and welding distributor shares its secret to keeping employees happy.

Dewitt, NY - To get the most out of its employees, TWSCO (Houston, TX) underscores the importance of sustaining a company culture that promotes employee retention and pride, and advances a positive reputation within the community, according to Wes Morris, vice president, human resources at TWSCO and a member of the human resources committee for the Gases and Welding Distributors Association (GAWDA). Morris' article, "The Art And Science Of Motivation" appears in the Winter 2011 issue of Welding & Gases Today, the leading magazine for the gases and welding equipment industry.

Employees are one of a company's greatest investments, and turnover only adds to the mounting cost. "Depending on the type and level of position, a good rule of thumb is that turnover costs the company anywhere from 25 to 250 percent of the annual salary of the exiting employee," says Morris. The cost of turnover includes hard and soft costs, from loss of productivity and customer impact to the costs of hiring and training a new employee. Reducing turnover and keeping things running smoothly is about finding the right people for the right positions, then keeping them motivated.

To measure the success of its motivational techniques, TWSCO uses performance reviews, which rate employees on several Critical Success Factors, which define the functions of an employee's job. Each Critical Success Factor is tailored specifically to a position using the input of the employees performing the job. Says Morris, "We created the CSFs by partnering with our employees, asking them what they do, and then really listening to their answers." Performance reviews let employees know that management is actively observing and listening to them. "Employees welcome the feedback and they come to look for their regular reviews-it is not uncommon to see our employees reminding managers when their reviews are approaching."
