Better Than Silicones, Popular European Compound Now Available in North America
SHIRLEY, MA (January 17, 2007) -- One of Europe's most popular and best-selling EMI shielding TPEs (thermoplastic elastomers), touted as a better, more cost effective and more environmentally friendly material than silicone, is now being formally introduced to North American shores by TPE Solutions, Inc. The MA-based firm, with three warehousing facilities across the continent, was just named the exclusive NA sales agent and distributor for the product line.
Patented and compounded by Premix Oy (Inc.) of Finland, Europe's #1 European supplier of conductive polymers, new PRESEAL® TPE's for EMI shielding applications (where shielding for electromagnetic interference is desired) offer both improved mechanical and electrical properties. Electrical conductivity is achieved with metal coated fillers.
What is New About This New Market Entry
Molders who use silicone-based EMI shielding find they cannot get the configurations needed and molding complex shapes is difficult; many other polymer-based materials don't have the EMI shielding parameters and end-use benefits provided by the new PRESEAL TPEs. Sources report that this is a $1 billion market that is continuing to grow rapidly.
Applications for these easy-to-process compounds to mold into seals and gaskets include electronic and electrical components, military products, PDAs, outdoor and indoor telecommunications fixtures, base stations, cardiac defibrillators, personal and laptop computers, cell phones, automobiles, music players (such as iPods),disk drives, seals and gaskets and products used in grounding applications, among others. All TPE compounds can be customized for application specific purposes.
The EMI shielding TPE can be overmolded onto most substrates without the use of primers. This alone makes them an ideal alternative to silicones. The high level of conductivity and EMI shielding provided by the compounds, makes them vastly superior to any other competitive TPE on the market today.
PRESEAL® compounds (modified SEBS-based) were developed for demanding applications requiring high conductivity and easy processing. Electrical conductivity is achieved with metal coated fillers which are, depending on the grade, either silver-coated glass or nickel-coated glass. As compared to silicone, the new EMI shielding TPEs are suitable for normal thermoplastic processing methods (both injection molding and extrusion), to enable molders to achieve complex shapes and sizes and for mass production as well. Further, cycle times are short and there is no need for vulcanization.
Use of these TPEs result in end products that have advanced uniform conductivity, even in the surface of the materials; the matrix structure of the elastomers base improves the mechanical strength and enhances processing; the TPEs have excellent flow characteristics and compression set.
As compared to silicones, the PRESEAL® compounds process better and faster, are more cost effective, can be molded into complex shapes and can be fully recycled. They offer an unusual combination of properties including low compression set, low hardness in a highly filled compound (55 to 65 Shore A, depending on the filler) and a low melt viscosity. Further, PRESEAL® TPEs have low volume resistivity (0.003 to 0.030 ohmcm); high attenuation (90 to 100 dB); and grades can be modified for galvanically compatibility with aluminum. The producer claims that these TPEs are the best for EMI shielding products on the market.
TPE Solutions notes that conductive engineering plastics, but not the line of PRESEAL® compounds, will be continued to be made and sold by Premix Thermoplastics Inc in Milton, Wisconsin affiliated company to Premix Oy.
TPE Solutions, Inc., founded in 2004 by world renowned TPE expert Jonas Angus, stands apart from most TPE material suppliers by offering all types of TPE technologies, which include olefinic elastomers, TPVs, SEBS, MPR, TPU, COPE , COPA, ETPVs for higher temperature applications as well as super TPVs and specialty alloys. Applications for TPE Solutions' compounds include automotive applications, building and construction products, consumer goods (durable and non-durable), appliances, electrical and electronics products, fluid delivery goods, housewares, medical devices, packaging, sporting goods and telecommunications. Many of the TPEs can also be formulated to meet NSF and FDA specifications.
