Optoelectronic Technology Session Addresses Real-World Applications for Interfacing Light Sensors with Microchip's PIC® Microcontrollers

August 18, 2010 (Plano, TX) - Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions®, Inc. (TAOS) announced today that - for the sixth consecutive year - the company will conduct an optoelectronic solutions class as part of the curriculum offered during Microchip Technology Inc.'s 2010 MASTERs Conference, which will be held at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix, AZ from Wednesday, August 25, through Saturday, August 28. TAOS, Inc. is the leading global supplier of optosensors to the computer, consumer, industrial, medical and automotive markets and an industry pioneer of digital ambient light sensors, color sensors and integrated proximity detection solutions. Now in its 14th year, Microchip's MASTERs Conference helps software and hardware engineers and engineering managers to find real-world solutions to their embedded control design challenges through in-depth education on Microchip's microcontroller, analog and memory products, as well as direct interaction with Microchip Field Application Engineers and other industry experts.

The TAOS class - titled "The Eyes of the Microcontroller: Interfacing Optoelectronic Sensors to the PIC® Microcontrollers" -- will look at various ways to sense light and how to select the appropriate optical sensor for the application. Details involved in the interface of various types of optical sensors to Microchip's PIC microcontroller will be examined. Techniques for extracting meaningful information from the signal will be discussed, including simple data processing algorithms with short code examples. Several real-world applications will be highlighted in the course of the discussions, including an absolute angle and position encoder, lighting or display control system, a color sensor, and an airborne particle turbidity sensor.

Microchip's 2010 MASTERs Conference will feature more than 80 different engineer-to-engineer technical training classes. TAOS, Inc. is one of six select Microchip partner solution companies that have been invited to conduct classes on specific areas of electronics expertise. The hands-on or lecture classes will enable attendees to better understand the current and potential applications for integrating the technology solutions that these partner solution companies provide in PIC microcontroller-based designs. The TAOS, Inc. class is listed as #1479 OPT in the 2010 MASTERs class list.

"Microchip is honored to have TAOS, Inc., a leader in light sensing solutions, as a tenured technology partner in our annual MASTERs Conference," said Ken Pye, Microchip's vice president of worldwide applications engineering. "The synergy between our diverse PIC microcontroller portfolio and the broad TAOS optosensor offerings, combined with our joint industry expertise, provides conference attendees with valuable technical training on emerging applications for microcontroller-based systems."

"Having the opportunity to participate in Microchip's prestigious MASTERs Conference for the past six years has been an enriching experience for TAOS, Inc. because it has given the company valuable insight into emerging embedded control applications across a broad range of market segments," said Carlo Strippoli, TAOS, Inc. vice president of marketing & sales. "Through the dialogue with the design engineering community attending this conference, TAOS, Inc. has been able to directly apply their requirements toward the design and development of future light sensing solutions."
