Sotera Wireless to Highlight New ViSi Mobile Capabilities and Concepts at FutureMed Conference

SAN DIEGO — Sotera® Wireless, Inc. will share its vision for the possibilities of patient monitoring at the upcoming FutureMed conference being held at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, Calif., November 3 through November 6. The Company will demonstrate its groundbreaking ViSi Mobile® System and preview a concept for ambulatory surgery that transmits vital sign numerics, waveforms and alarms from the ViSi Mobile Monitor to Google Glass.

The ViSi Mobile System packs powerful patient monitoring capabilities into a lightweight, wrist-worn device ensuring clinicians anytime, anywhere access to accurate and trended vital sign information. With the addition of Sotera's newly FDA-cleared continuous non-invasive blood pressure (cNIBP) technology, the ViSi Mobile System is now the first body-worn monitor able to non-invasively measure all core vital signs on a beat-to-beat basis.

Currently the ViSi Mobile System is intended for patients in general medical/surgical hospital units, where the current practice of vital sign spot checks is believed to be the environmental factor most disruptive to patients' sleep. Authors of a recent study noted that sleep deprivation is prevalent among hospitalized patients and has been linked to unfavorable outcomes and low patient satisfaction.

Blood pressure, typically checked every four hours, is arguably the most uncomfortable and disruptive of all vital signs to obtain. Sotera's patented cNIBP will improve the patient comfort levels, since it eliminates the need to wake patients for routine cuff-based blood pressure checks.

"Increasingly, hospitals will be financially rewarded for quality of care, safety and patient satisfaction," said Dr. Gunnar Trommer, vice president marketing and business development for Sotera. "Technology that delivers vital information while eliminating unnecessary disruptions aligns with the drive to transform hospitals into gentler, safer places that provide the optimal conditions for healing."

Patient Monitoring during Surgery with Google Glass

In the future, Sotera plans to extend the use of the ViSi Mobile System to other application areas likely to benefit from mobility and access to accurate vital sign information. At FutureMed Sotera will display one of its early-stage concepts: streaming vital signs from the ViSi Mobile System to Google Glass.

Operating surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists will benefit from the heightened situational awareness gained from the hands-free Glass. Ambulatory surgery settings, where efficiency is key, are considered an ideal fit for such a marriage of technology.

"Wireless, continuous monitoring devices hold enormous promise, and will be an important part of the medical landscape in the very near future," says Dr. Oliver Aalami of Stanford University and co-founder of VitalMedicals. "Displaying contextually relevant information, such as patient vital signs, straight to Google Glass allows the surgeon to operate without missing a catastrophic change in the patient's condition."

About ViSi Mobile

Sotera's FDA cleared ViSi Mobile System continuously monitors all core vital signs: heart rate or pulse rate, electrocardiogram (ECG) or heart rhythm, blood oxygenation level, blood pressure, respiration rate and skin temperature - with an accuracy and resolution typically found in high-acuity hospital units while not limiting mobility. ViSi Mobile is a comprehensive system, designed to enhance patient safety by allowing early detection of patient deterioration and connecting clinicians with their patients anywhere, any time.
