Solutions Through Innovation: STMicroelectronics Showcases Advanced Systems and Applications in Automotive, Consumer and Industrial at Electronica 2006

STMicroelectronics will be at Electronica 2006, November 14-17, in Munich, Stand 207, Hall A5

Geneva, November 9, 2006- STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), one of the world's leading semiconductor manufacturers, will demonstrate a variety of innovative solutions for Automotive, Digital Consumer, and Industrial environments at the Electronica 2006 trade show. ST's stand at the New Munich Trade Fair Center will host state-of-the-art in-home entertainment, mobile imaging and sensor technologies, in-car multimedia and safety demos, as well as a wide range of production-ready industrial application concepts.

ST's single-chip MPEG-4 decoder facilitates the enjoyment of high-definition multimedia in the home. Multiple operators worldwide are deploying solutions based on the world's first high-definition (HD) single-chip device, which supports HD TV broadcasts via cable, terrestrial, satellite and Internet Protocol (IP). ST's chip is compatible with both HD-DVD and BluRay DVD standards and provides advanced security and connectivity features, such as high-speed USB for external DVR (Digital Video Recorder) applications. Live at Electronica, ST's single-chip HD decoder will power a big-screen LCD-TV in the booth's Home Entertainment zone.

The world's leading supplier of CMOS image sensor modules for wireless phones, ST will showcase its high-performance imaging solution capable of controlling the entire imaging subsystem in a mobile phone. The concept enables phone makers to combine high-resolution, high-speed, multi-camera functionality with camera modules of different sizes and resolutions, delivering a range of applications including multi-megapixel still images and videoconferencing.

ST's MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology ushers in a new era in motion-controlled man-machine interaction and data integrity protection in mobile phones and other portable devices. Visitors to Electronica will have a chance to experience the capabilities of ST's high-performance MEMS sensors, embedded in a wireless 'smart ball.' The golf-ball-shaped object can operate as a compass, measuring tape, pedometer, wireless PC mouse or a 3D-object viewer. Another typical MEMS application on display at Electronica is a complete ST reference design of a pedometer, which counts steps, distance and speed, as well as calculates calories burned during the walk or run.

Digital radio technologies allow improved reception and expand the spectrum to allow more stations to broadcast more streams of digital data (audio, text, video) in the same band. At Electronica, ST will demonstrate turn-key system solutions for both terrestrial and satellite digital radio in the car.

A fully working prototype of the Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) receiver, developed in cooperation with Kenwood and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits, paves the way to the development of low-cost, low-power DRM terminals. DRM is a new, open standard that allows terrestrial digital broadcasting in the long-, medium- and short-wave (AM) frequencies.

The world's first implementation of in-car digital TV demonstrates the multimedia capabilities of digital transmission. Successfully trialled by Blaupunkt during this year's Soccer World Cup at cruising speeds of up to 200km/h, ST's T-DMB (Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) solution provides exceptional video and audio quality, scalable performance, ultra-low power consumption, and advanced security features with digital rights-management support.

The in-car Mobile TV solution is part of ST's comprehensive hardware and software platform for infotainment and navigation. Called NaviFlex, the platform integrates ST's Nomadik application processors and single-chip GPS receivers with a complete software package, including Real-Time Operating System, specific middleware and application software. Another NaviFlex solution on display at Electronica is a feature-rich, low-power personal navigation system with audio/video playback, wireless connectivity, image decoding and camera support.

Developed in cooperation with Mobileye, the advanced driving-assistance System-on-Chip employs ST's high-dynamic-range camera sensor to provide lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, vision/radar fusion and pedestrian detection for active safety behind the wheel. Another contribution to increasing road traffic security, demoed at Electronica 2006, is ST's adaptive front lighting system, which controls and adjusts headlamp leveling and bend lighting based on the vehicle's current position.

ST's car door modules provide outstanding configurability and reliability. The solution demonstrated at Electronica integrates a mirror with an embedded turn indicator, a lock/deadlock system, a power-window, and safety and footwell lights.

In the Industrial section, ST will show its unparalleled range of semiconductor system solutions and application-oriented design tools for customers in Factory Automation, Communication, Metering, Point-of-Sale, Motor Control, Home Appliances, Power Management and Lighting industry segments. One of the demos is a wireless lighting control network based on ST's single-chip ZigBee devices. ZigBee is a standards-based wireless platform optimized for the unique needs of remote monitoring and control applications.

Visitors to Electronica are welcome to stop by ST's booth (207, Hall A5) to see the future of home and personal multimedia, car infotainment and safety, and various industrial environments.
