Smith Receives TAPPI Technical Award and Rohm & Haas Prize

(Fulton, N.Y.)-The name Duane Smith is well known in the international converting community, especially among members of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industries (TAPPI), the leading association for the worldwide pulp, paper, packaging and converting industries. Smith, a 31-year veteran of TAPPI, was recently awarded the prestigious 2008 TAPPI PLACE Division Technical Award and Rohm & Haas Prize. The award was presented by the President of TAPPI, Mr Larry Montague, at their annual conference held this fall in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Smith, Product Manager of Specialty Winding for Davis Standard Converting Systems, was honored for his many technical contributions to the polymers, laminations, adhesives, coatings and extrusion markets. This award is presented annually by the TAPPI to recognize outstanding accomplishments or contributions that have advanced the industry's technology. The honor also includes the Rohm & Haas Prize, which is a financial stipend of $1,000 from an endowment fund created by specialty materials' company Rohm and Haas.

Smith is recognized throughout the industry for his over fifty (50) informative presentations as well as his many published works. Among his most notable accomplishments:

o 27 technical presentations and four new technology showcases at TAPPI Conferences;
o Facility member at nine TAPPI short courses;
o Editing and writing contributions for the first and second editions of the TAPPI publication "Roll and Web Defect Terminology";
o Multiple leadership positions including TAPPI Conference Chairman in 1991 and chairman of various technical and awards committees for the past 20 years;
o Two U.S. patents in the winding area;
o 26 technical presentations at AIMCAL, CMM, SPE and other technical conferences;
o Published 16 times in major trade journals, including TAPPI Journal;
o Authored section on winding of flexible films in 2007 Modern Plastics World Encyclopedia.
