Six People Are Elected to SME Board of Directors.

June 24, 2009 - The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation has selected 6 members to serve a 2-year term, effective January 1, 2010, on its Board of Directors. Those elected include: Barbara W. Kaufmann of 3M Foundation; Dr. Irving Pressley McPhail of NACME; Mike Sayen of Siemens PLM Software; Edward M. Swallow of Northrop Grumman Corporation, IT sector; Bill Tacon of BioOhio; and William Taylor of National Academy Foundation.

DEARBORN, Mich., June 17, 2009 - The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation has selected six new members to serve a two-year term on its Board of Directors effective January 1, 2010. They are:

Barbara W. Kaufmann, manager, Education Giving/3M and director, 3M Foundation; Minneapolis, Minn. Kaufmann directs strategy and implementation of 3M's support to education which targets Math, Science and Economics/Business education from elementary through Graduate school. She also collaborates with corporate and foundation leaders throughout the U.S. on philanthropic issues and support of Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing (STEM) curriculums in K-12 and higher education institutions. She holds a B.A. in Business Management and an M.A. in Organizational Leadership from St. Catherine University, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Minn.

Dr. Irving Pressley McPhail, executive vice president and chief operating officer, National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, Inc. (NACME), White Plains, N.Y. McPhail has served for more than 30 years with experience as a teacher, scholar, advocate and senior executive in higher education and public school administration. He holds a bachelor's degree in development sociology from Cornell University, a master's degree in reading from the Harvard School of Education and a doctorate in reading/language arts from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa.

Mike Sayen, vice president of Strategy for Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of the Siemens Industry Automation Division, Plano, Texas. Currently, Sayen leads Siemens PLM Software's strategic planning activities and initiatives and is focused on developing and communicating Siemens PLM Software's corporate strategy for manufacturing customers. Sayen earned a Bachelor of Science degree - with a double major in systems science and computer science from the College of Engineering at Michigan State University, Lansing, Mich.

Edward M. Swallow, vice president, Strategic Capture and Proposals for Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) Information Technology (IT) sector, McLean, Va. He directs all positioning, capture and proposal activities and analyzing new IT market opportunities across the IT sector and supports corporate initiatives to identify and promulgate best practices in pursuing new business. He earned a bachelor's degree in physics and astronomy from State University of New York, Oneonta, a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Syracuse University, and a master's degree in systems management from the University of Southern California. He is a graduate of the Air Force's Squadron Officer's School and Air Command and Staff College. He is chairman of the board of the National Defense Industrial Association's (NDIA's) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Workforce Division.

Bill Tacon, PhD, senior director, Workforce and Education, BioOhio, Columbus, Ohio. Tacon leads BioOhio's statewide strategy to build a world-class bioscience workforce infrastructure aligned with industry needs. Central to this has been the establishment of industry-academic partnerships, which aim to develop educational curriculum and content that better prepare Ohio's future workforce. For more than 30 years he has served as a technical leader, innovator, visionary and research manager at BioOhio with experience in the development and commercialization of biopharmaceutical and agricultural biotechnology arenas, helping to shape BioOhio and Ohio's biosciences future. Tacon holds a B.S. degree in zoology from the University of London, England, and an M.S. degree in molecular biology from the University of Sussex, England.

William Taylor, senior director, Network Development & Expansion, National Academy Foundation (NAF), New York, N.Y. Taylor guides network growth including management of NAF's "Year of Planning" program, launching new academies and building their capacity to integrate career themes with curriculum and work-based learning. He manages all new theme development including the recently launched Academy of Engineering (AOE). Taylor holds an A.A. Liberal Studies degree from Monroe Community College, Rochester, N.Y., and holds a B.A. in Sociology from State University of New York College, Geneseo, N.Y.

Chambers, PhD, JD, Lawrence Technological University who died on May 20, 2009. This board position remains unfilled.; Treasurer/Chair of Finance: Peter F. Mackie, senior financial consultant at Wells Fargo Advisors., Assistant Treasurer/Vice Chair of Finance: Kenneth Vedra, Ed.D., superintendent of Bellingham Public Schools, Bellingham, Wash.
