Siemens Energy's Instrumentation & Electrical Business Unit has been awarded its third series of new contracts for its innovative SPPA-T3000 distributed control system in 2009. Each contract is for upgrading the control systems at United States power generating facilities located in Alabama, New Jersey and Ohio with the installation of the SPPA-T3000. Since the SPPA-T3000's introduction, Siemens Energy has won contracts for original and retrofit installations at more than forty other power plants throughout the United States and Canada for the purposes of improving plant operations, reliability, security, efficiency and maintainability.
Extremely reliable and easy to use, the SPPA-T3000 is specifically designed to implement total power plant and turbine control on one common platform. The system can be integrated into existing IT landscapes, independent of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), and provide reliable and real-time functionality for operations, engineering, diagnostics, archiving, alarm and field devices. With a secured Web-based, java/XML-enabled interface, authorized users can gain access at any time from any location. In addition, Embedded Component Services(TM) technology simplifies power plant operation and maintenance by providing a single user interface for all tasks via intuitive links throughout the entire system and enabling plant operators to run individual power plant units in a flexible operating mode exactly matching the demand.

PowerSouth's McIntosh power plant, located in McIntosh, Alabama, selected the SPPA-T3000 control system to replace existing legacy controls systems for its compressed air energy storage (CAES) unit and its twin Siemens SGT6-2000E (formerly V84.2) gas-fired combustion turbines that generate a summer capacity of 338-MW. McIntosh is the only CAES power plant in the entire United States.
The McWilliams Power Plant, located in Andalusia, Alabama, is a 1on3 combined cycle facility with a 149-MW summer capacity. Siemens Energy will replace the existing control systems for one SGT6-2000E gas-fired combustion turbine and three ABB steam turbines with the SPPA-T3000 control system. Upon completion, the SPPA-T3000 control system is intended to become the common control platform for PowerSouth's entire SGT6-2000E fleet.
Cogentrix will upgrade the entire controls system for its steam turbine and boiler at its Logan plant, a 225-MW coal-fired base-load facility in Logan Township, New Jersey. The project scope also includes installation, commissioning and training. This is the second unit within Cogentrix to select Siemens SPPA-T3000 for its DCS modernization.
Rolling Hills Power Generation Facility, a peaking plant located in Wilkesville, Ohio, owned by Rolling Hills Gen, LLC, operates five Siemens SGT6-5000F gas-fired combustion turbines with an 815-MW summer peaking capacity. Siemens will modernize the controls systems for all five engines and the balance of plant automation system with the SPPA-T3000 control system.
