The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) held bilateral meetings with several international counterparts from around the globe at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) General Assembly meetings in Cape Town, South Africa, earlier this month. ANSI staff met with the new CEO of the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), Bonakele Mehlomakulu, Ph.D.; officials of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), including their new secretary of consumer affairs; and the leadership of the British Standards Institute (BSI), the State Committee of Ukraine for Technical Regulation and Consumer Policy (DSSU), the Standardization Organization for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GSO), the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC), the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), the Kazakhstan Institute for Standardization and Certification (KazInSt), Standards Australia (SA), and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC).

With an eye toward strengthening standardization ties with several of ANSI's international partners, ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) during the various bilateral meetings, including:

An ANSI-DSSU MOU, signed by Bhatia and DSSU head Larysa Losyuk

An ANSI-GSO MOU, signed by Bhatia and GSO secretary-general Anwar Alabdulla, Ph.D.

An ANSI-KazInSt MOU, signed by Bhatia and the director general of KazInSt Arman Shakkaliyev

Among other commitments outlined in the MOUs, ANSI and the respective national standards bodies pledge to: 1) encourage bilateral relationships, joint business ventures, and information exchange between standards organizations in each country in an effort to stimulate industry-to-industry cooperation, international standardization, and free trade; 2) exchange viewpoints on the activities and work programs of various regional and international standardization and conformity assessment organizations; and 3) facilitate dialogue among national experts in various areas of standardization and conformity assessment.
