Press release date: September 3, 2010
Recognizing that oil exploration increasingly involves reservoir fluids at pressures and temperatures not previously encountered, Schlumberger and Cambridge Viscosity formed a collaborative effort to define and develop viscosity standards appropriate for these new conditions.
Early in 2010, this coalition sponsored an industry-wide High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) Viscosity Standards workshop to gauge interest, broaden support and guide the effort. Widespread industry participation in the workshop indicated significant interest in developing a fluid viscosity standards program.
Robert Kasameyer, president of Cambridge Viscosity, indicates, "The primary conclusion of the workshop was that the viscosity standards program should be developed as soon as possible. In addition, fluid viscosities and conditions were targeted and broad characteristics of the program were identified. These included involving multiple measurement technologies and multiple laboratories in the effort. The National Institute of Standards Technology and the International Association of Transport Properties were two such organizations identified as important to the program. The effort is expected to be completed in three to four years."
The workshop included four presentations and a roundtable panel discussion with industry experts in reservoir fluids. The executive summary of the entire session and several of the presentations are available at: slb.com/services/testing/reservoir_sampling/fluid_lab/hpht_pvt_studies/hpht_viscosity_standards.aspx
