Press release date: August 8, 2006

A manufacturing and supply capability for seamless stainless steel tubes in coils for hydraulic and instrumentation systems and for control lines and chemical injection lines is being promoted to the process industries by Sandvik Materials Technology.

Sandvik coiled tubing has the key benefit of being produced in a totally integrated manufacturing process - from steel melt to finished product. The result is a high quality product with consistent quality from batch to batch and delivery to delivery.

Key customer advantages of Sandvik's coiled tubing are reduced system installation times and costs, higher system integrity and reduced inspection costs due to fewer tube joints. Further benefits can be obtained from cutting tube to exact lengths from the coil, maximising tube yield, and from the ease of shipping and storage of tube in coils.

Available in imperial sizes from 1/8 inch to 3/4 inch in diameter and metric sizes from 3mm up to 19mm, Sandvik coiled tubing is manufactured in the standard 304/304L, 316/316L stainless steels, duplex stainless steel and special nickel chromium grades. Tubes can be supplied level wound on wooden or steel reels or loosely wound.

Produced at its manufacturing plants in Canada and Germany, tubing is available either in single coils up to 400 metres long or in orbitally welded multiple coils in lengths up to 10500 metres, depending on the tube size and material grade.

Hydraulic and instrumentation tube is produced in accordance with the standards laid down by the manufacturers of fittings and couplings. Many sizes and grades can be supplied from stock.

In the oil and gas industry, a typical coiled tube application is for continuous, small bore downhole control lines, around 1/4inch (6mm) outside diameter, to provide a constant pressure to sub-surface safety valves. Similar lines in diameters up to 3/4inch (19mm) are used for downhole chemical injection for methanol or acid injection. More recently, duplex stainless steel coiled tubing has been seen as offering an interesting alternative to carbon steels during workovers of production wells - an operation in which nitrogen, fluids or acid are injected to stimulate production. Duplex steel can increase the number of well entries that can be achieved with each string before it is discarded.
