Press release date: September 6, 2012

Friedrichshafen - Astrium Services' ND SatCom has been commissioned to provide Südwestrundfunk (SWR) with the uplink-technology for 6 radio SNGs which are to be implemented in a regional contribution network in the southern part of Germany. SWR is a public German media company and second largest broadcasting corporation within the ARD, the Association of Public Broadcasting Corporations in Germany. The contract consists of hardware and software based on the SKYWAN IP platform and the SKYRAY Light antenna standard for secure and cost-efficient transmissions of contribution content via satellite. This technology is part of the Astrium Services' ND SatCom product range.

Astrium Services' SKYWAN technology won recognition with the customer thanks to its efficient use of bandwidth. Up until now the standard technology used in SWR radio broadcasting was based on off-the-shelf antennas and SCPC-modems, a technology which is considerably less efficient in regards to bandwidth management. Mr. Georg Fuss, Head of Innovation & Project Management at SWR comments: "We believe the SKYWAN technology to be the perfect one to enhance our broadcasting infrastructure. It is a very efficient and scalable solution that can easily be extended to accommodate whatever technological requirements the future may bring." SWR is also considering the option of an upcoming upgrade of the system through the Media Fleet Manager, an attractive tool to easily plan and manage transmissions including required resources. With the addition of SKYRAY Light, SWR receives a comprehensive all-in-one solution.

Through its ND SatCom product range, Astrium Services is a leading global supplier of satellite-based broadband VSAT, broadcast, government and defence communication networks and ground station solutions. Its innovative technologies are deployed in broadcast and media, enterprise and telecom environments, as well as government and defence, worldwide.
