SPE Thermoforming Division Announces Call for Entries in Second Annual Student Parts Competition

NEWTOWN, CT, U.S.A.:  The Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Thermoforming Division has announced a call for entries in its second annual Student Parts Competition, encouraging students to collaborate on a real potential thermoformed application specified by SPE. The submission deadline is August 15, 2014.

The Competition will be held in conjunction with the 23rd SPE Thermoforming Conference®, which will take place September 15-18 at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center and Hotel in Schaumburg, Illinois. Awards for winning entries will be presented at the Thermoforming Awards Dinner on Tuesday, September 16, at the hotel.

The project consists of a thermoformed product that can be mounted to a standard air conditioning (A/C) vent in an automobile, hold cell phones, pens, or other small objects, and be suitable for personalization. It must be able to support, as a minimum, the weight of a cell phone and be able to withstand the temperature changes inside a vehicle within a range of 0-140 ºF. Also required are a quick-mounting system for easy attachment and detachment at a standard A/C vent and airflow passage from the top and bottom of the product.

“The Thermoforming Division has a long history of supporting education through grants and scholarships,” said Steve Zamprelli, 2014 Parts Competition chair.  “The Student Parts Competition provides students with the opportunity to design and execute a practical application while receiving industry recognition at the Thermoforming Conference.”

A trophy will be presented to the university that submits the winning entry. Awards of $1,000 and $500 will be awarded to universities for the first-prize and second-prize winners, respectively.
