SME Lean Book Author Honored with The Shingo Prize

Mark Hamel Receives Award for the Kaizen Event Fieldbook at The Shingo Prize Annual Conference

DEARBORN, Mich.,- A long-time advocate of lean practices, Society of Manufacturing Engineers member and author, Mark Hamel has been awarded The Shingo Prize Research & Professional Publications Award for the Kaizen Event Fieldbook.

Given out this week in Utah at The Shingo Prize Annual Conference, the Shingo Research Award recognizes and promotes research and writing regarding new knowledge and understanding of lean and operational excellence.

"Receiving the Shingo Research & Professional Publication Award is truly an honor and, at the same time, very humbling," said author Mark Hamel. "The award is recognition of not only my work, but also that of the Kaizen Event Fieldbook's contributors, reviewers, editors and many others in the lean community who helped make the book better than it would have been. I hope that leaders and practitioners find the Fieldbook's contribution to the overall lean body of knowledge value-added."

In context with lean theory and lean leadership principles, the Kaizen Event Fieldbook provides an understanding of the essential "whys" and "hows" of kaizen event standard work and event management. It addresses strategy, pre-event planning, execution and follow-through in a multi-phase approach. This bookcontains practical examples, over a hundred figures and tables and many real-life "Gemba Tales".

Even before receiving this accolade, Hamel's book had been acknowledged as a "must-have" reference book for any lean library. "A critical distinction from other texts on the market, the Fieldbook links the technical aspects of kaizen to lean philosophy. Kaizen is the game changer in any lean transformation, and this is the game book," according to Bruce Hamilton, president of the Greater Boston Manufacturing Partnership.

With the rigorous review given to the numerous new lean publications, lean practitioners can use The Shingo Research Prize as a way to filter through the many references available and identify the most relevant and noteworthy titles.

"Since The Shingo Prize itself has been compared to the Nobel Prize, then The Shingo Research Prize is like the Pulitzer," said Mark C. Tomlinson, executive director & general manager, SME. "And we are proud to have the Fieldbook in our large pool of lean knowledge, resources and certifications."
