Recipients included Raju Dandu, PhD of Kansas State University; Corning Inc.'s engineering project portfolio manager Vincent Wyatt Howell, Sr.; and Mark Michalski, Director of Operations for MKS Instruments. Mechanical engineer Randall T. Raikes in Waukesha, WI and Phillip S. Waldrop, PhD, professor at Georgia Southern University, were also honored.

SME Honors Its Most Loyal Members with the 2010 Award of Merit
DEARBORN, Mich. - The Society of Manufacturing Engineers announced today the winners of this year's Award of Merit.
"For more than 50 years, SME has presented the Award of Merit to honor members who have made valued contributions to the Society's professional activities and growth," said Barbara M. Fossum, PhD, FSME, SME president 2010.
"We're pleased to continue this long tradition with five dedicated recipients," she said.
This year's recipients include:
Raju Dandu, PhD

Dandu is currently a Society membership consultant, the faculty advisor for Student Chapter S277, and chair of the Student Relations Subcommittee. Among his many efforts on behalf of SME, Dandu has helped organize well-attended events for Mid-Kansas Chapter No. 230. Within this chapter, he also held a number of chapter leadership roles including chair, treasurer and secretary. Read More

Vincent W. Howell has been a member of SME for nearly 30 years. During this time, he has served in the secretary, Chair-Elect and Chair roles of two SME chapters - Lexington, Ky. and Elmira, N.Y. As the current chairman of Elmira Chapter No. 24, Howell has led efforts to increase chapter activities, chapter awareness, and membership. Additionally, Howell has been an advocate for the engineering profession to both the general public and young people. His opinion piece, "Engineering Still a Strong Career Choice," appeared in the Elmira newspaper, the "Star-Gazette." Read More

Mark Michalski became a member of SME in 1992. Since then, he has held several leadership roles. Locally, Michalski served as an executive board member and chair of Boston Chapter No. 33. Michalski has been a member of the SME Leadership Series team as well as a primary speaker at more than a dozen Series conferences around the U.S. During these events, Michalski has focused his efforts on training others how to recruit new SME members. Currently, Michalski serves as chair of the Chapter Enhancement Committee and will be assuming the role of chair of the Member Council in 2010. Read More

Randall "Randy" Raikes has held numerous leadership roles within the Society including secretary, chair-elect and chair of Milwaukee Chapter 04. He currently serves as the chapter's bulletin and web page editor and is dedicated to enhancing its overall visibility. Additionally, Raikes has devoted his efforts to inspiring the next generation of engineers by serving as a student liaison with the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. For his outstanding service to the Society and others, SME previously presented Raikes with the SME President's Award in 2005 and 2007. Read More

Phillip S. Waldrop has been an SME member for more than 30 years. During this time, he has served the Society in a number of roles including being elected chair of Dallas Chapter No. 195, and later, the chair of Central Ogeechee River Chapter No. 262 in Georgia. He is currently the faculty advisor of Student Chapter S085 as well as a membership consultant to student chapters at Georgia Southern University, Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Alabama Huntsville and Southern Polytechnic State University.
