SME Elects Distinguished Individuals to 2012 College of Fellows.

August 15, 2012 - Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) elected 6 industry leaders to its College of Fellows. According to SME's 2012 president LaRoux Gillespie, "The Class of 2012 SME Fellows exemplifies outstanding research, innovations, and leadership." Inductees include Dean L. Bartles, PhD, FSME; Ruxu Du, PhD, FSME; F. Brian Holmes, FSME, CMfgE; Fritz Klocke, Prof. Dr.-Ing., FSME; Steven Y. Liang, PhD, FSME; and Yung C. Shin, PhD, FSME. Deadline for 2013 Fellow nominations is December 1, 2012.

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers Announces New Class of Fellows

DEARBORN, Mich. - The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), the world's premier source for manufacturing knowledge, education and networking, has elected six outstanding industry leaders to the Society's prestigious College of Fellows. The 2012 class joins 278 other SME members who have been elected as Fellows since the program's inception in 1986, and represents various segments of the manufacturing community.

"The Class of 2012 SME Fellows exemplifies outstanding research, innovations and leadership," said LaRoux Gillespie, Dr. Eng., FSME, CMfgE, PE, SME's 2012 president. "They represent a diverse group of nationally and internationally recognized individuals who have contributed much to their communities, the field of manufacturing and to the Society. We commend each and every one of this year's class of Fellows for their ongoing dedication."

A Fellow is a member recognized by the manufacturing community as a contributor to key aspects of the profession. The SME College of Fellows was created to honor those members who have made outstanding contributions to the social, technological and educational aspects of the manufacturing profession. This honor can only be earned through 20 or more years of dedication and service to manufacturing engineering.

The 2012 Class of SME Fellows Dean L. Bartles, PhD, FSME Vice President of Advanced Programs and Strategic Growth Ordnance and Tactical Systems Division General Dynamics Corp. St. Petersburg, Fla.

Dean L. Bartles has more than 34 years of management experience and has served in both domestic and international capacities, with emphasis on manufacturing facility startups, plant management, research and development. He currently serves as the vice chairman of the Manufacturing Division of the National Defense Industrial Association and is an SME international director. Bartles recently served on President Obama's Economic Recovery Advisory Board's Education and Training Subcommittee and served more than 10 years on the U.S. State Department's Defense Trade Advisory Group.

Ruxu Du, PhD, FSME Professor Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering Chinese University of Hong Kong Hong Kong

Ruxu Du demonstrated a prolific research career in both academia and industry. He has published more than 300 papers in various academic journals and international conferences. His research focuses on design and manufacturing (metal forming and machining), as well as robotics. Du has taught at the University of Windsor and the University of Miami, and is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

F. Brian Holmes, FSME, CMfgE Vice President and General Manager Columbia Plastics Ltd. Surrey, British Columbia, Canada

F. Brian Holmes has overseen the design and construction of a new plant to consolidate two plant operations, and worked on the development of injection-molded wood waste for silvaculture containers, which spun off into a separate company. He served as president of SME in 2007 and has been the recipient of several SME awards including the 1991 SME Award of Merit, the SME Endurance Award and the SME Joseph A. Siegel Service Award in 1999. He currently serves as vice president and general manager of Columbia Plastics Ltd., where he is responsible for the company's overall performance.

Fritz Klocke, Prof. Dr.-Ing., FSME Chair Professor of Manufacturing Technology Laboratory for Machine Tools & Production Engineering RWTH Aachen Fraunhofer Institute of Production Technology Aachen Aachen, Germany

Fritz Klocke was awarded the title doctor of engineering by the University of Hannover in 2006 for his outstanding achievements in science, his efforts in the industrial implementation of a broad range of manufacturing techniques as well as for his commitment in numerous scientific committees. His professional accomplishments in the industry include serving as co-director of the WZL Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering and head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology in Aachen.

Steven Y. Liang, PhD, FSME Morris M. Bryan Jr. Professor in Mechanical Engineering for Advanced Manufacturing Systems Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta

Steven Y. Liang has authored in excess of 300 book chapters, archival journal papers and professional conferences articles. He has supervised more than 70 postdoctoral studies, PhD dissertations and masters' theses. Liang has served as chief technical officer, vice president, then president of Walsin Lihwa Corp., a publicly traded manufacturing entity with more than $6 billion in revenue. His technical interests lie in precision engineering, extreme manufacturing and technology innovation.

Yung C. Shin, PhD, FSME Professor of Mechanical Engineering Donald A. and Nancy G. Roach Professorship of Advanced Manufacturing Purdue University West Lafayette, Ind.

An accomplished researcher, educator and professional engineer, Yung C. Shin has developed new manufacturing courses and laboratories, which are now equipped with state-of-the-art facilities worth well over $4M. Some of his research areas include laser processing of materials and machining of advanced materials. He has published more than 280 papers, co-edited two books and has authored chapters in several engineering handbooks. He established the Center for Laser-Based Manufacturing in 2003 and currently is serving as its director.

2013 Fellows Nominations Deadline: SME members worldwide are encouraged to nominate members from industry, academia and government who have made a notable impact in the field of manufacturing. The deadline for 2013 Fellow nominations is December 1, 2012.
