SME Education Foundation Announces 2011 Board of Directors
The SME Education Foundation 2011 Board of Directors, including four new members, will continue to expand its STEM-based education programs.
DEARBORN, Mich. - As the U.S. ramps up efforts to improve STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing) education, the SME Education Foundation is building on its 30-year record of advancing technology-based education with the selection of its 2011 Board of Directors. The Foundation's board members, representing business, industry and academia, were selected based on their involvement and commitment to issues critical to preparing the next generation for tech-based careers in a global economy.

Shimoyama, vice president, Global Sales Operations, Rockwell Automation, Milwaukee, Wis.
Biographies - New Board Members:
Ashok Agrawal, M.S., P.E., dean, Math, Science, Engineering and Technology Division (MSET), St. Louis Community College (STLCC), Florissant Valley, Mo. and director of the Emerson Center for Engineering and Manufacturing. Agrawal is also involved in international activities collaborating with Georgetown University to coordinate the Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships (CASS) and Scholarships for Education and Economic Development (SEED) programs, and visiting technical colleges and programs in Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Germany and Ireland. He holds an MS degree in Materials Science, an MS degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Kentucky, and a BS degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Nagpur University in India.
Kathy Burnham, APR, senior vice president, Padilla Speer Beardsley, Inc., Minneapolis, Minn., directs strategic planning, conducts research and manages integrated marketing communications programs. She is a founding member of the Minnesota Manufacturers' Coalition, and serves on the board for the Minnesota Council for Quality. Burnham holds a bachelor's degree in communications from Metropolitan State University, St. Paul, Minn., serves on the university Alumni Association's board of directors and is a community faculty member in the university's communications college. She is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and the Business Marketing Association.
Mike Schmidt, director, Education and Community Development, Ford Motor Company Fund, Dearborn, Mich., oversees Ford's major national partnerships with public K-12 education which includes the Henry Ford Academy and the Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies (Ford PAS), as well as the company's relationships with colleges and universities. Prior, he was involved in managing the design and launch of the Henry Ford Academy, served as chair of the National Employer Leadership Council, and member of the joint UAW/Ford team for the design of the UAW/Ford Family Service and Learning Center initiative. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan and Master of Public Management from the School of Public Policy, University of Maryland, College Park, Md.
Susan E. Shimoyama, vice president, Global Sales Operations, Rockwell Automation, Milwaukee, Wis., directs its sales force; and a new organization within Rockwell which she created, developed and implemented resulting in a transformed global market-to-quote processes. Her credentials include global product management, commercial marketing, channel development, market development and business operations. Her expertise includes strategic and portfolio planning, technology road-mapping, sales and channel development, business process operations, market development, commercial planning, people development and team collaboration and continuous improvement and Lean Enterprise. Shimoyama holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Champaign, Ill.
