New Event Designed to Improve Manufacturers' Competitiveness in 21st Century

DEARBORN, Mich., May 5, 2008 - The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) announces a new event for manufacturers in the oil and gas industry: Manufacturing Innovations - Technologies for Oil and Gas, scheduled June 9-10, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, CANADA. Held alongside the Global Petroleum Show - the world's largest oil and gas event - the conference is designed to help manufacturers become more competitive in today's global marketplace and will provide insight on new and existing manufacturing technologies. Industry-leading lean practitioners and business leaders will speak on how innovation in people management can lead to unrivaled results and a positive change in culture.

"SME Oil and Gas Industry group members identified opportunities and developed this conference to support the changing industry," said Mark C. Tomlinson, SME executive director and general manager. "This conference is intended for manufacturers and suppliers looking to gain a competitive edge in the oil and gas industry."

Conference Highlights

Monday, June 9 Keynote Panel Discussion - Manufacturing Influences on Final Product Delivery Moderated by Brian D. McCready, vice president, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, key industry leaders will discuss how to manage the complex matrix of people, machines, process technologies and materials required in today's oil and gas industry and will answer such questions as "How does an organization manage fluctuating lead times, supply chain bottleneck and people issues?". Panel participants include representatives from Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, Optima Manufacturing, ReedHycalog, Schlumberger, EPM Group, Labarge Electronics, LeTourneau Tech, and Comtech.

Process and Equipment Technology Session This session discusses the latest technologies used in the manufacturing of parts and components, representing the heart of the oil and gas industry. Technical presentations include: Material Constraints that Lead to Product Innovations Alternative Material Uses Specialty Alloys Rapid Prototyping for Cast Components

Tuesday, June 10 Keynote Panel Discussion - Creating Manufacturing Competitiveness with LEAN Culture Many manufacturing leaders consider LEAN a valuable initiative for increasing business effectiveness and profitability; however, challenges arise when companies implement LEAN tools without focusing on the culture needed to sustain any positive efforts. Moderated by Robert A.R. Mills, chairman, Kudo Industries Inc., this session will focus on the "how-to" behind the culture change needed to implement and sustain LEAN efforts within the manufacturing environment. Panel participants include representatives from Kudu Engineering, SAIT Polytechnic, The Learning Factor, The Berg Companies, Weatherford, BodyCote, and Olympus NDT.

Process and Equipment Technology Session A continuation of day one, this session once again discusses the latest technologies used in the manufacturing of parts and components, representing the heart of the oil and gas industry. Technical presentations include: Increasing Component Performance with Post-Processes Treatments Ultrasonic Testing of Welded Components Precision Machining for Oil and Gas Components Managing Highly Diversified Low-Volume Component Manufacturing
