41,116 SMART Board interactive whiteboards being supplied to Enciclomedia project to deliver quality education
CALGARY, Alberta --- January 9, 2006 --- SMART Technologies Inc. announces that it will provide 41,116 SMART Board(TM) interactive whiteboards for the second tender in Mexico's Enciclomedia project, making SMART the single largest provider of interactive whiteboards to the project. Of 120,761 interactive whiteboards purchased by the Mexican government over two tenders, 43,028 are SMART's. Product reliability was one of the key factors that led to the preference for SMART Board interactive whiteboards. VideoNet, SMART's distributor in Mexico, will provide the necessary support and training required for this widespread installation.
Enciclomedia is a project administered by the Mexican government's Secretariat of Public Education. Its aim is to enrich students' classroom experience through the use of technology products and digital content, and to boost student engagement, participation and learning outcomes. Enciclomedia will equip more than 145,000 fifth and sixth grade Mexican classrooms with technology products worth US$1.8 billion. Interactive whiteboards will be used to deliver digital curriculum materials also being developed as part of this initiative. Other products in the classroom technology suite include projectors, computers, computer speakers, uninterrupted power supply (UPS), computer desks and printers. All classrooms will be fully equipped by May 2006. The digital content delivered through all of these products is offered on CD-ROMs to teachers. The content includes digitalised textbooks for grades five and six with connections to Microsoft® Encarta® multimedia encyclopedia and other digital lesson materials.
This interactive whiteboard purchase makes Enciclomedia the largest education technology and digital content project anywhere in the world. Other countries where interactive whiteboards are widely used in education include the US and the UK. Most of the top 500 US school districts use SMART products and almost 60 per cent of interactive whiteboards installed in UK schools are from SMART.
"SMART is the global market segment leader in interactive whiteboards," says Nancy Knowlton, SMART's president and co-CEO. "SMART's selection as the largest provider of interactive whiteboards for the ground-breaking Enciclomedia project has reaffirmed the advantages of SMART products in the classroom and made us the clear preference in yet another country."

They can also write over applications in digital ink, then save their work for future study and review. The SMART Board interactive whiteboard engages students with diverse learning styles by providing both immediate access to a wide range of digital materials and a common focus for the entire class - not something easily achieved with other classroom technology products.
