Robert E. Mackey is Named Chairman ASTM International Geosynthetics Committee

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., February 16, 2010-ASTM International Committee D35 on Geosynthetics has named Robert E. Mackey, a partner and senior design engineer at S2L Inc. in Maitland, Fla., as its new chairman. The 300-member committee oversees 130 ASTM standards related to the geosynthetic industry.

In addition to his duties as chairman, Mackey also works on several D35 subcommittees and is a past chair of Subcommittee D35.04 on Geosynthetic Clay Liners. In 2003, the committee honored him with the ASTM Award of Merit, the Society's highest recognition for individual contributions to standards activities. He has been a member of ASTM International since 1989.

At S2L Inc., a consulting engineering firm specializing in waste management issues and waste containment facilities, which he joined in 1997, Mackey manages permitting and design projects for waste management facilities and assessment of groundwater monitoring programs. He is the firm's chief technical expert on waste containment facility design and the materials used in construction.

Outside ASTM International, Mackey is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Florida Engineering Society, the North American Geosynthetics Society, the Solid Waste Association of North America and the International Organization for Standardization, where he works on Technical Committee 221 on Geosynthetics. He is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering at the University of Central Florida.

A graduate of the University of Evansville, Evansville, Ind., where he earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Mackey holds a master's in environmental engineering from the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio. He is a licensed professional engineer and a board certified environmental engineer.
