The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) congratulates Randy A. Dougherty, vice president of the ANSI-American Society for Quality (ASQ) National Accreditation Board (ANAB), on his appointment as chair of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).
Dougherty was affirmed on October 20, 2009, at the IAF General Assembly in Vancouver, Canada.
As IAF Chair, he succeeds Thomas Facklam of the German Association for Accreditation. Mr. Dougherty said that his priority is to ensure that the Forum is well-structured and has the resources it needs to fulfill the expectations of its stakeholders.
"Worldwide, stakeholders look to IAF to ensure that accredited conformity assessment bodies are impartial and competent; this is necessary to inspire confidence that an accredited certification - whether of a product, a company's management system, or a person - can be relied on as an attestation by a competent and independent third party that the accredited body conforms to specified requirements," said Mr. Dougherty.
Prior to being named chair of IAF he served two terms as chair of the IAF Technical Committee, and he is a member of the IAF Executive Committee.
Mr. Dougherty has a wealth of experience in the accreditation community, with 25 years of work in third-party conformity assessment. Before joining ANAB in 2001, he was president and CEO of NSF-ISR, Ltd., a management systems certification body. Previously, he worked for NSF International, an ANSI member and audited designator.
He is also active elsewhere internationally, as a member of the ISO/CASCO (International Organization for Standardization's Conformity Assessment Committee) Chairman's Policy and Coordination Group and co-convener of ISO/CASCO Work Group 21. Mr. Dougherty is also co-convener of the ISO 9000 Advisory Group, and a member of the IAF-International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC)-ISO Joint Working Group.
"On behalf of the U.S. conformity assessment community, ANSI is pleased to congratulate Mr. Dougherty on this prestigious appointment," said S. Joe Bhatia, ANSI president and CEO. "As a founding member of IAF and an ANAB affiliate, we have long seen his excellent leadership and vision at work. We look forward to the many excellent contributions he will make to further third-party conformity assessment activities in his new position."
