Radio Ideal for Large-Scale Emergency Response Coordination

ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 7 // -- Packed with robust functionality, advanced feature sets and extraordinary programming versatility, the new BK Radio DPH-CMD digital portable radio for command and control (first announced on 7/24/06) from RELM Wireless Corporation (AMEX:RWC) is being shown and demonstrated for the first time at the APCO Annual Conference & Exposition sponsored by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials - International here through August 10.

The BK Radio DPH-CMD is compliant with the APCO Project 25 technical standard for digital public safety radio, compatible with the APCO Project 25 FDMA Common Air Interface and interoperable with other manufacturers' radio equipment that also meets APCO Project 25 specifications. The DPH-CMD also offers mixed-mode operations between digital and analog radios, including automatic detection of and response to digital or analog radio signals.

"The DPH-CMD represents a giant step forward in the engineering and design of command and control radios capable of coordinating multi-group, multi-site, wide-area emergency response logistics and communications," states RELM President and CEO David Storey. "We see the DPH-CMD as an extremely flexible tool for various applications, as a state-of-the-science digital radio solution, yet at an affordable cost."

The digital portable DPH-CMD provides 500 radio channels with 25 user groups (including a custom command group that can be set up and programmed while on the fly) and up to 20 users per group operating in the 136-174 MHz VHF frequency band.

"Along with a host of specialized features and enhancements, one of the defining characteristics of the digital DPH-CMD is the range of custom-programming options to organize communications to the individual's specific and immediate requirements," adds David Storey. "These include programmable keypad menu, top switches, call list and pick lists with various options. The portable DPH-CMD is field-programmable, and our signature BK Radio software programming is easy and intuitive."

Advanced features and functions also include: all capabilities specified by the APCO Project 25 standard, group calls, emergency group calls and unit-to-unit calls with automatic callback, as well as: pick list of 32 tone guards for field selection; channel scan, group scan, talkback scan, dual-priority scan and scan delay; nuisance channel delete; cloning and FLASH technologies for transferring programming to radios, and weatherproof design that meets MIL-STD (military standard) specifications, plus new enhanced keypad and two-line display.

"The new BK Radio DPH-CMD portable radio, like all products from RELM Wireless, also meets our own core requirements," Storey maintains. "These core requirements include superior audio quality, ease of use and programming, longer battery life than competitors' comparable products plus rock-solid reliability, all at lower cost. Or, as we say, 'more radio for your dollar.'"

First Command and Control Radio: GPH-CMD in 2005

The pioneer that set the pattern for the emergence of command and control radios as a new field of specialization in two-way radios was introduced by RELM Wireless in 2005 (4/9), the analog BK Radio GPH-CMD.

The analog portable GPH-CMD was specially engineered to the requirements of a longtime customer. "Both the analog GPH-CMD and the new digital DPH-CMD are prime examples of our focus on engineering products custom-designed to the practical needs and requirements of our customers on the job," observes Dave Storey.

Robert Samo, president of radio dealer Silverado Avionics, Inc. Communications Systems Engineering in Napa, California, notes that "the application that drove the development of RELM's first command and control radio was the practical coordination problems in fighting large-scale wildfires. The GPH-CMD portable radio has been well-received and has already become the standard among agencies responding to wildfires here in the West, with thousands of GPH-CMD radios now deployed. The feedback we have been getting from GPH-CMD radio users continues to be very positive," Samo concludes.
