Proposed ASTM Standard Will Cover Recent Technological Advances for Asphalt Adhesives

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., —A proposed ASTM standard will reflect recent technological advances for asphalt adhesives. ASTM WK40056, Specification for Adhesive Used with Modified Bituminous Sheet Materials, is being developed by Subcommittee D08.20 on Roofing Membrane Systems, part of ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing.

“The proposed standard will provide a means of describing the changes that have been made in the formulation and performance of asphalt adhesives currently available in the marketplace,” says Carter Slusher, national technical manager, Firestone Building Products Co., and a longtime ASTM D08 member. The proposed standard will provide a tool for purchasing the latest asphalt adhesives for use with modified bitumen roof membranes.

“It is rare to find an individual who has a complete understanding of all building materials, including roofing, plumbing, waterproofing and structural steel,” says Slusher. “The proposed standard will provide a means to choose a performance material without the necessity of developing expertise in a host of areas.”

Slusher notes that, once approved, ASTM WK40056 will be used by government and private specifying agencies as well as by laboratories testing adhesive products for conformity, quality and reliability. D08.20 welcomes the participation of all who produce, specify and use adhesives with modified bitumen products to participate in the development of ASTM WK40056.
