Agfa HealthCare to unify and manage hospital group's IT infrastructure to support its ongoing development

Mortsel, Belgium/Bonn, Germany December 04, 2007 15:00

Agfa HealthCare, a leading provider of IT-enabled clinical workflow and diagnostic imaging solutions, announces today that KMG Kliniken AG Bad Wilsnack has commissioned it to carry out the multi-site introduction and the day-to-day management of its ORBIS(TM) Hospital Information System (HIS). The hospital group, that already has ORBIS installed at its Gustrow and Havelberg facilities, will thereby expand the solutions introduction to its other facilities. Following the implementation of the solution, Agfa HealthCare will take on an Application Service Provider (ASP) role and will be responsible for the staging and operation of ORBIS in the six acute care clinics of the group.

With the unification of the IT systems, a homogeneous, multi-site secure data interchange solution is being provided to the whole organisation for the first time. KMG Kliniken is the third healthcare facility to opt for ORBIS in combination with the company's ASP solution in Germany, following installations at the German Red Cross Clinics in Berlin and the Frankfurt-based Agaplesion healthcare group.

Agfa HealthCare will be responsible for the secure operation of ORBIS in the KMG clinics in Gustrow, Kyritz, Pritzwalk, Wittstock, Havelberg, Sulzhayn, and the administrative center Bad Wilsnack. Volker Kalwatz, a member of the Managing Board of KMG Kliniken AG explains: "The development of our IT infrastructure is of strategic importance for the future success of the KMG clinics, in terms of the ongoing development of the group. However, the effective and secure management of a state-of-the-art Hospital Information System is not one of the core competencies of a private clinic, with just under 2,500 beds. Accordingly, we commissioned Agfa HealthCare to come up with a clearly defined all-round package that would provide us with an economical, secure and solid infrastructure to support ORBIS in the years ahead."

Agfa HealthCare's ASP agreement with the KMG Kliniken includes the provision of the central hardware infrastructure in a computer center, the WAN network services, the system management and the general infrastructure services. The KMG Kliniken's IT department will, in turn, specifically be able to concentrate on the organizational implementation and further development of the HIS in the coming years. An external, certified computer center will help maintain the necessary levels of computing power to all critical processes in the clinics.

In the first stage of the project, the currently installed ORBIS systems at the acute care clinics in Gustrow and Havelberg will be combined with the institutions' current legacy solutions in Wittstock, Kyritz and Pritzwalk. They will eventually be replaced by the Agfa HealthCare HIS. This phase will be followed by the consolidation of the IT infrastructure throughout the group. The routine ASP operation in the six clinics is currently scheduled for January 1, 2008.

Reiner Niehaus, Sales Director Agfa HealthCare Germany states: "Leading clinic operators have already recognized the benefits of the ASP model and the high level of operational security which it offers. We are pleased that a further prominent hospital group in Germany has opted for this future-oriented operator model."

About ORBIS

ORBIS enhances the quality of patient treatment and provides fast and complete availability of patients' histories, including all images and data. Patient data and histories will be available to authorized nursing, technical and medical staff, allowing for quicker diagnoses and treatments. To date, Agfa HealthCare's ORBIS has been successfully deployed in over 750 institutions and has more than 450,000 daily users.
