In Italy, espresso is not just a great tasting pick-me-up; it's a way of life. Considered to be the best on the market, Italian espresso machines pour billions of coffees every day at cafés and restaurants around the world. An intense aroma, a rich, velvety texture, and an even, fine-textured tawny-brown 'crema' on top distinguish a great espresso from a mediocre one. And in Italy, only great espresso sells. To pour the perfect demitasse requires a well-tuned espresso machine, with the correct water temperature and pressure. Danfoss and a renowned Italian espresso machine manufacturer met for the first time in 2009. After initial talks, the espresso manufacturer placed an order for the MBS1900 pressure transmitter for its newest machine, which is coming to market later in 2010.
Pressure a key factor in espresso making
To safeguard standards and promote Italy's favorite beverage, the National Institute of Italian Espresso issued the 'Certified Italian Espresso' (INEI) certification in 1999. Cafes and bars bearing the certification must use a certified coffee blend, certified equipment and licensed personnel. One of the Institute's 35 members, the manufacturer must ensure that its machines meet the high standards set by the INEI. With a reputation for quality and reliability, the Danfoss MBS 1900 is playing an important role in the company's newest, energy saving espresso machine.
The espresso machine works like this: Cold water flows into the machine and is pumped to the manifold, where it's distributed under high pressure to a boiler, one for each group. At the press of a button, the heated water flows through the group into the firmly packed coffee in the portafilter and into the pre-warmed espresso cup. In this new model, the MBS 1900 reads the water pressure in the manifold and sends an electronic signal to the manometer's digital display. Pressure is key to espresso making, so it's important that operators can monitor this function and make changes quickly, to ensure consistently great coffee.
