Presentations are Invited for ASTM Workshop on Elimination of the Effects of Water on the Measurement of Particulates in Fuels by Automatic Particle Counters

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.-Presentations are invited for a workshop on Elimination of the Effects of Water on the Measurement of Particulates in Fuels by Automatic Particle Counters, to be held Dec. 4, 2012, at the Marriott Waterside Hotel in Norfolk, Va. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, the workshop will be held in conjunction with the December standards development meetings of the committee.

The objective of the workshop is to hold a technical forum for presentations and discussions associated with current research and practices relating to eliminating the effects of water droplets being counted by automatic particle counters when testing diesel, biodiesel blends and aviation turbine fuels. The forum will also provide future direction for further investigations and standardization with the aim of enhancing fuel quality monitoring and leading to the availability of such techniques for use in fuel specifications.

  • A keynote speaker will outline the value of using automatic particle counters for fuel monitoring and the significance of being able to eliminate or subtract counts due to suspended water particulates.
  • It is expected that presentations will include a number of different procedures, to quantify the amount of water droplets present in the sample using techniques such as, but not limited to, the use of co-solvents, imaging optics, additives and particle size and volume profiling.
  • The discussions at the end of the workshop will be focused on providing clear direction for future work and possibly producing a technical guide on this topic.
To participate in the workshop, presenters must submit a 250-300 word abstract to workshop co-chairman Mike Sherratt at mjs@stanhope-seta.co.uk by June 24, 2012.
