During these trying economic times, the Detroit area has been one of the hardest hit in the country. Countless businesses have either closed or downsized and, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Detroit and the surrounding cities of Warren and Livonia recorded the nation's highest unemployment rate - 8.9 percent - in May of 2008.
Though circumstances may seem bleak, a handful of companies are still thriving despite the less-than-favorable economic conditions. PIRTEK Westland is a perfect example: The mobile hydraulic repair company located at 28540 Van Born Road has recently broken the company's world record for sales in a single month thanks to its extensive work with a prominent area manufacturer. Eli Dorfman, the owner of PIRTEK Westland as well as PIRTEK Madison Heights -in business since 2004 and 1999, respectively - also revealed that though many businesses are cutting back, both of his operations have increased their number of employees and doubled their sales within the past two years.
"During a time when everything seems doom and gloom, it feels good to do well and show other businesses that they, too, can share the same level of success," said Dorfman, a former executive with a prominent Detroit-area meat processing company. "As long as you keep to your word and perform to the best of your ability, your business can last through anything."
