Piezo Switches Operate in Hot and Ice Cold Conditions

Piezo switches resistant to water and dirt can also withstand extreme temperatures

Santa Rosa, California, February 19, 2008. Schurter piezo switches are known for their extremely long lifetime and seal-tight surface, which protects against dust and fluids. In addition to these already proven features, the operating temperature is now extended to -40 up to +85 for the normally open (N.O.) types. The switches can now be used in outside applications where extreme temperatures and temperature fluctuations may occur.

Piezo switches contain no moving parts, have a sturdy metal housing made of anodized aluminum or stainless steel and are hermetically sealed. Virtually no material wear or mechanical fatigue occurs, resulting in a rated lifetime of greater than 20 million switching cycles - practically unlimited. The piezo switches are resistant to dirt, sand, dust and water; they can neither freeze nor stick through contact with fluids. They are especially suited for applications located in areas exposed to heavy snow and ice, including ticketing and toll machines, call boxes, building access controls, construction equipment, and transport vehicles.

Piezo switches are available in standard mounting diameters of 16, 19, 22, 24, 27 and 30 mm. Other mounting diameters, materials, colors and shapes can be custom designed. Laser lettering is available on the actuating surface. A variety of standard legends exist. Customer-specific lettering and symbols can also be produced. Versions with point or ring illumination, for display of switch position ON/OFF or other optical feedback, are available in 22 mm mounting diameter. The illumination appears on the actuator surface.
