Performance Engineers Can Monitor End-User Experience, Analyze Transactions, Drill Down for Performance Diagnostics with RTI v3

FAIRFAX, Va.-- OC Systems, Inc. has released the beta version of RootCause Transaction Instrumentation (RTI) 3.0. RTI is a deep-dive performance monitoring and diagnostic tool that helps performance engineers, software developers, performance testers and operations resolve complex performance problems that affect the end-user experience.

RTI collects response time data for web-based applications and allows users to drill down into transactions through the browser, network, web and application tiers, all the way down to the database query to identify the root cause of the slow application performance.

"The application performance management and business transaction management tools that do deep diagnostics are virtually all heavyweight solutions that are expensive and time-consuming to implement and require significant training to use," said Oliver Cole, president of OC Systems, Inc. "In this new version of RTI we decided to build a simpler, less expensive solution."

"We created a product with a tightly defined set of core capabilities that would be easy to use even for people who do not have a lot of experience doing performance engineering, including developers, testers, and operations," Cole explained.

RTI collects data about the events that contribute to an end-to-end transaction. Typically that includes a collector for the browser and a collector for each back-end Linux server. Collectors take just minutes to install - the entire process can be completed in as little as a half hour.

Once collectors are in place, RTI begins measuring transaction performance from "click" to "render" in the browser. Data is analyzed in the RTI console:

o Transaction Overview Report provides a way to visualize the performance of transactions over time and quickly isolate specific transactions for deeper analysis. o Transaction Deep Dive Report lets users drill down into performance problems and network latencies across end users, web layers and application layers. o Transaction Summary Report presents statistical trends across multiple transactions, making it possible to summarize the performance of a single test run or multiple test cases.

Using these reports, root-cause failure can be quickly identified and traced to individual workstations, network links, host and applications down to the method level. In addition to browser-based transactions, RTI supports end-to-end transaction coverage of web services, test automation frameworks including JMeter and soapUI, and message-based transactions.

Data collection can be modified on the fly, without impacting or restarting the application. Reports and analysis can be easily shared with others inside and outside the organization, speeding problem resolution.

RTI consists of two components:

o RTI Web, which measures web browsing transaction response time and decomposition. o RTI Enterprise, which extends transaction tracing into back-end web and application servers.

RTI Web currently supports Firefox and Internet Explorer on Windows platforms. RTI Enterprise currently supports Firefox and Internet Explorer on Windows platforms as well as JBoss, Tomcat, Apache / IBM HTTP Server, SoapUI, custom Java applications and Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) for both Windows and Linux.
