Penn Stainless Products Announces Strategic Alliance with Lehigh University Materials Science and Engineering Department

Quakertown, PA – Penn Stainless Products and Lehigh University have announced a collaborative effort to provide metal consumers with access to the expertise in Lehigh’s Materials Science and Engineering Department.

This strategic partnership will enable Penn Stainless and Lehigh University to work together to expand knowledge and collaborative opportunities between material end users and the research community. The alliance is designed to resolve technical issues related to corrosion and welding, while giving students the opportunity to learn about the practical challenges associated with manufacturing and engineering.

Lehigh’s research experience in metallurgy and metalworking processes such as welding and forming align perfectly with Penn Stainless’ diverse inventory of stainless, duplex and nickel-based alloys and its customer base of fabricators, machine shops, and engineering, specialty construction and process industries.

Penn Stainless, located just a few miles from Lehigh’s campus, will provide Lehigh faculty and students with access to over 20 specialty stainless, duplex and nickel alloys for research and experimentation, processing capabilities, and insight into issues impacting metal users across a wide range of industry segments and applications. Dr. John DuPont, of the Materials Science and Engineering Department, said, “We are very pleased to work with Penn Stainless Products. It’s vital that our students understand the real-world issues facing metal consumers, and the company’s extensive inventory and processing expertise is an invaluable asset that will help our students to complete experiments."

Jim Seward, president of Penn Stainless, added, “Lehigh University’s metallurgical staff and laboratory capabilities, combined with their range of engineering expertise in areas such as mechanical and industrial engineering and structural design, are excellent resources for Penn Stainless and our customers to draw from. Lehigh gives us access to domain experts along with world-renowned laboratory and testing facilities, giving us the added capability of leveraging actual research related to issues impacting our customers.”

Industry collaboration is an important value for Lehigh. Mr. Gene A. Lucadamo, Industry Liaison for Lehigh’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, said, "We understand how important it is to connect industry with education, academic research, and government interests. Lehigh has many industrial and governmental partners, and we believe that this relationship with Penn Stainless significantly adds to these interactions."
