On October 5, 2013 Green Hill Park in Salem, VA was overcome by zombies. Halloween may still be weeks away, but running for your life (and someone else’s) started early this year. The Roanoke County Park and Recreation department held an inaugural 5K Zombie Run/Walk with all proceeds benefiting the Special Olympics of Virginia.

Upon registering for the race, each participant or team was given a flag football style belt. Several hundred people formed teams and worked to “survive” and make it to the end without having their flags stolen by the zombies. The flags served as the runners’ lives. In order to be deemed a survivor, the runner or team of runners must cross the finish line with at least one flag still in their possession. Zombies were stationed throughout the course and would run a short distance to chase a runner down. Each runner or team to “survive” with at least one flag was entered into a prize drawing at the end of the run/walk.

According to their website, the Special Olympics of Virginia, to which the proceeds of the zombie run/walk were donated, is a program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Through work in sports, health education and community building, Special Olympics addresses inactivity, injustice, intolerance and social isolation by encouraging and empowering people with intellectual disabilities which lead to a more welcoming and inclusive society. One of ParknPool’s account managers, Chris Lopez, along with a group of friends, participated in this past weekend’s Roanoke County Zombie Run/Walk and finished the race as a “survivor.” “I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have some fun with friends and contribute to a great cause,” explained Lopez, “I am happy to report that our team, The Dead Rabbits, made it through with one life to spare. I will definitely do it again next year!”
