DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY (Oct. 27, 12:55 p.m. ET) - Business is strong at Parkinson Technologies Inc. -- a manufacturer of web-handling and winding equipment based in Woonsocket, R.I. The company reported a K 2010 that its sales and staffing in 2010 are both back to above 2008 levels.
"In the last two-and-a-half years we've added 30 employees, a sales office in the southeast outside Atlanta and a sales office in the Midwest outside Milwaukee," said Stephen Montalto, director of sales and marketing.
He said the company did lay off workers at the low point of the recession, but he estimated that staffing is now 2-5 percent above where it was in 2008.
Business is coming from companies that are extruding new materials, like polylactic acid films, plus specialty films like separator films for rechargeable batteries.
"There's definitely pent-up business," Montalto said. "Companies realize they need to add capacity. They held off, especially last year. They need to grow their business, so they're definitely adding capacity."
The company's 7-layer, 5-extruder pilot line in Woonsocket is also busy these days - its booked out for several months - with companies developing a variety of new films.
At the show (Hall 3, Stand D54), Parkinson is showing its Genesis 700 slitter/rewinder, which it introduced last year at NPE in Chicago, and its Key Filters KCN continuous screen changer.
