Parker Chloramine-Resistant Compound E1512-70 Significantly Reduces Seal Degradation, Disintegration, and Swelling in Potable Water Applications

LEXINGTON, KY, November 28, 2007- Parker Hannifin Corporation, the global leader in motion and control technologies, has released a new chloramine-resistant EPDM material, E1512-70, designed to resist the attack of chloramines over time.

This cost effective ethylene propylene material provides improved resistance to chloramine degradation and swelling and extends seal life, reducing potential warranty claims when used in potable water handling equipment and plumbing fixtures. Water treatments facilities are progressively changing to chloramine as a primary means to disinfect potable water in lieu of free chlorine. One reason is because chloramine provides better protection against bacterial re-growth in systems with large storage tanks and dead-end water mains.

Chloramines, however, are more aggressive to elastomers than equivalent concentrations of free chlorine. Chloramine attacks the elastomer causing degradation, disintegration, and swelling. These property changes can cause seal failure, creating performance issues and warranty claims for water handling equipment manufactures. The standard ASTM D6284 test for rubber properties was conducted on NSF-certified elastomer compounds, including existing Parker formulations, new Parker chloramine-resistant formulations, and competitor formulations.

Based on the test results, Parker's chloramine-resistant materials will provide significantly longer useful seal life compared to all other tested materials. For a test report or additional information on this compound, please contact our application engineers at 859-335-5101. To order additional copies of Parker's E1512-70 bulletin, call Catalog Services at 1-440-205-7799 and reference bulletin ORD 5752.

Parker's O-Ring Division products are at the leading edge of elastomer technology and this new material is no exception. We offer a broad spectrum of materials ranging from the chemically resistant, high temperature Parofluor(TM) and Parofluor ULTRA(TM), to a variety of premium elastomeric sealing materials.

Whether it is an "off-the-shelf" industrial standard or a material in a custom size developed to customer specifications, our commitment to service is designed to minimize downtime and maximize quality. In addition to O-Rings, Parker's O-Ring Division offers ParBak(TM) anti-extrusion rings, installation lubricants and O-Ring assembly and removal tools. Our manufacturing plants are ISO 9001, TS 16949 and AS 9100 registered.
