On May 8, 2012, Metal-on-Metal Total Hip Replacement Devices symposium will provide forum for consensus development and scientific exchange on needs for characterization and standardized testing related to MoM hip replacement devices. Main focus is to address unmet standardization needs in characterization of adverse local tissue reactions; metallic product measurement in fluid and tissue samples; analysis of retrieved MoM implants; and in vitro testing of MoM implants under adverse conditions.

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., - Papers are invited for a symposium on Metal-on-Metal Total Hip Replacement Devices, to be held May 8, 2012, at the Sheraton Phoenix in Phoenix, Ariz. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices, the symposium will be held in conjunction with the May standards development meetings of the committee. The purpose of this symposium is to provide a forum for consensus development and scientific exchange on the needs for characterization and standardized testing related to MoM hip replacement devices. The main focus is to address unmet standardization needs and to help establish best testing practices in the four following areas: o Characterization of adverse local tissue reactions;
o Wear/corrosion: metallic product measurement in fluid and tissue samples;
o Analyses of retrieved MoM implants; and
o In vitro testing of MoM implants under adverse conditions. Papers on any topic related to the objective are requested. A student presentation is also sought on any topic related to the objective. Interested students must submit a 250-300 word preliminary abstract to Jack Lemons, University of Alabama-Birmingham, Dentistry Building, Birmingham, Ala. (jack.lemons@ortho.uab.edu). Interested participants must submit a 250-300 word abstract by Aug. 1, 2011. The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. Symposium chairman Steve Kurtz will notify you via e-mail by Aug. 15 of your paper's acceptability for presentation at the symposium. Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Journal of ASTM International (JAI).
