PMMI Retains FSMA Expert Jeff Barach, Ph.D.



Subject matter expert will help members understand how FSMA impacts their customers.

Reston, Va. - PMMI is pleased to announce it has retained Jeff Barach, Ph.D., as an expert on the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) passed in 2011.

"Food manufacturers are looking to their packaging and processing machinery suppliers for assistance in complying with the new - still evolving - regulations. Dr. Barach will help our members understand the implications of FSMA as it affects their customers, so they can better serve those customers," says Charles D. Yuska, president & CEO, PMMI.

Barach is a food scientist and microbiologist with particular expertise in new technologies related to food processing, preservation and new food safety programs.

A former vice president of the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), he headed GMA's Science Policy Group and ran the GMA laboratory. He has been responsible for research and development, regulatory liaison activities, teaching, problem solving and trouble shooting.

"Dr. Barach is a subject matter expert (SME) on issues related to food safety modernization, biotechnology, food irradiation, nanotechnology and other new processing and testing technologies. He routinely participates in planning, development and management of special projects and programs for the food industry on health and safety issues, production of foods, regulatory inspection and compliance issues and training. We're very pleased to have him on board," Yuska adds.

Drawing on his experience as a lecturer, training professional and educator in food safety programs such as food safety, food sanitation and HACCP, Barach's work with PMMI will include webinars, presentations and seminars in addition to individual discussions with members at their request.

Upcoming presentations for the PMMI membership will include a webinar on new FSMA-related regulations, and sessions at PMMI's upcoming MarketTrends Roundtable and FSMA seminar.

Barach received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of North Carolina, and his MS and Ph.D. in food science from North Carolina State University.
