Based in the Minneapolis, MN area, PIRTEK Plymouth recently embarked on a business venture with their newest customer, Chukar Waterjet, Inc.
Chukar Waterjet offers underwater waterjet cutting and blasting equipment capable of operating at depths in excess of 3000 meters. This equipment is capable of cutting steel up to 250 mm thick or waterjet blasting at pressures up to 3800 bar. Their plan was to show off their new Deepwater Subsea Waterjet skid at the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, TX. With less than two weeks before the start of the show, this Deepwater Subsea Waterjet skid was ready to be outfitted with the hoses, fittings and adaptors. Not only did these products need to hold up to subsea pressure at depths exceeding one mile, but were also required to be stainless steel to resist rusting. With these specifications, Chukar began to look for the right company for the job.
Warren Christopherson, Operations Manager at Chukar Waterjet, phoned PIRTEK Plymouth's office very late in the day. He was asked if he wished to speak with the "afterhours" technician. He replied, "No, it could wait until morning."
"This is a true story and was the start of what turned out to be a fortunate find for us just 10 days prior to our conference," Christopherson recalls. "The following morning on my way to work, as I exited the freeway there was PIRTEK mobile service van in front of me. I followed it to a neighboring business and asked John, the PIRTEK Mobile Sales & Service Technician (MSST), to come over to Chukar Waterjet when he was finished. I explained to John what we needed and within a couple of hours, he had three (3) people from PIRTEK onsite, taking measurements and discussing the fittings with our engineers. By the next day it was clear that our best chance of getting the hoses done correctly, including air freight of the stainless fittings from several locations around the country, was to go with PIRTEK."
Christopherson continues, "The PIRTEK crew, including Jidge Ruth, Owner, and two MSST's, John Filipczack and Rich Thies were beyond helpful. They displayed a take-charge ownership of this project as if it were their own. With remarkable enthusiasm they worked from early in the morning until late into the day. This occurred for several days, expediting the necessary fittings, making and installing the hoses onsite with great care. Thanks to PIRTEK Plymouth, we arrived at the conference with a complete and professional looking skid to display!"
After all was said and done the job took nearly 100 hours to complete and required a wide range of products. More than 75 stainless steel adaptors with thread forms from SAE O-Ring Boss, JIC and NPTF were used. Stainless steel fittings for the hose and code 61 & 62 flange pads for the stainless tube were also required. Over 20 hose assemblies were manufactured, including 2" and 3" suction hoses and PFMU35 hose assemblies with a working pressure of 5000 psi with diameters ranging from (including) ½", ¾", 1" and 1 ½".
Rockledge, FL based PIRTEK is the world's leading service provider of ETA 1 Hour On-Site Hose Replacement. PIRTEK offers a 24 hour, 7 day service serving almost every facet of industry including construction, manufacturing, transportation, agriculture and engineering just to name a few. When an equipment breakdown occurs, it often results in costly delays in time and labor before the proper replacement hose is located and installed but PIRTEK vans carry the component parts necessary to manufacture hose assemblies on site. Hose and fittings can also be purchased over-the-counter at PIRTEK's Centers which serve as home base to its mobile fleet. There are over 40 PIRTEK Hose Service & Supply Centers nationwide and a fleet of over 200 servicing major metropolitan markets throughout the United States.
