PIRTEK Lake Wright Provides Service to a Top Customer

Norfolk, VA - PIRTEK Lake Wright has provided on-site hose repair service in the Norfolk, VA area since 2007. August 29, 2013 owner David Driskill received a call from one of his top customers to service a container vessel over the Labor Day weekend. The customer is the largest provider of services to marine propulsion boilers in the United States, and when it comes to hydraulic hoses, fittings and adaptors they contact PIRTEK Lake Wright. The vessel that contacted PIRTEK Lake Wrights top customer for service is part of the largest shipping company in the world.

Once the vessel docked to unload and load containers repairs needed to be completed. The vessel was due to pull in to the APM Terminals in Portsmouth, VA on Saturday, August 31st at 7:00 p.m. and due to leave on Sunday, September 1st at 5:00 a.m. for Rotterdam, Netherlands; thus allowing only one day to order parts and ensure everything was ready for the repairs Saturday night. This included Mobile Sales and Service Technician (MSST) Craig Gelardi registering his Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC) card with the APM Terminal and completing the Virginia International Terminals safety course to get on the job site.

Once Saturday night arrived, Gelardi was standing by as the vessel docked to start work immediately. He followed the safety and security regulations while on board the container vessel.

Multiple leaks on the deck equipment needed repairs due to age and the harsh environment. This included the system that deploys and retrieves the ship's anchor and the fore and aft winches which hold the ship steady to the pier by adjusting to the water movement. First, Gelardi replaced several hoses on the deck winches with PFMU35 hose assemblies using stainless steel German metrics. Next, he made more PFMU35 hose assemblies using BSPP fittings in various lengths and sizes. Then, Gelardi replaced a corroded valve assembly with new valves. Unexpectedly a cylinder had to be replaced because of rusted adaptors; luckily, Gelardi stocks his van with the metric adaptors. Gelardi measured, cut, cleaned and installed ten PFMU35 hose assemblies with German metrics and BSPP fittings all in stainless steel. The specific PFMU35 hose was used because it is American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certified which is required for all ships.

Gelardi worked 8 hours throughout the night and into the morning completing the entire job by 4:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The captain of the vessel personally thanked Gelardi for an excellent job.
