The Product Development and Management Association Launches New Web Cast Series

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. - In its continuing dedication to being the foremost advocate and comprehensive resource for the profession of product development and innovation, the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) is proud to announce the launching of a Web cast series for members and non-members of the Association.

"Industry professionals-from CEOs to entry level product managers, service providers and academics-look to the PDMA for help in solving their product development and management challenges and tools that will move their organization and industry to the next level," said PDMA President and Chair Rich Notargiacomo, NPDP. "These Web casts are just another way PDMA continues to provide value and growth where it counts."

Those who attend a Web cast will earn 1 product development hour (PDH) towards New Product Development Professionals (NPDP) recertification and those who are chosen to lead a Web cast can earn 2 PDHs towards NPDP recertification.

The first Web cast entitled, The Current State of Product Portfolio Management: Issues, Risks, Tools, and Takeaways, will be held at 2 p.m. EDT on August 27, 2009. Guest speakers Linda Roach, Vice President of Marketing at Planview, and Maureen Carlson, Managing Partner at Appleseed Partners, will share the results of the first of its kind benchmark study of those responsible for decisions related to and management of product portfolios. The study sheds light on common pain points felt in product-driven organizations and the significant benefits that can be gained by implementing product portfolio management solutions. It will feature the results of a survey completed in June 2009 and a current user case study featuring the successful implementation of a portfolio management software solution.

The case study will be presented by Mark Kleinle at Shure, a global leader in microphones and audio electronics, and will cover their use of portfolio management for demands of new product development and resource management. The new product development, management, and innovation community are all invited to attend this event. Other Web casts planned include:

Smooth Sailing through Recessionary Waters: Achieving Innovation Success in the Next Decade, 2 p.m. EDT, Sept. 10. - Contrary to conventional wisdom, innovation leaders use recessionary times to escalate key innovation efforts. This Web cast will explore practical ways to innovate through business slowdowns. Supported by case examples, the discussion will highlight strategic and tactical measures that senior and mid-level managers can take here and now to ensure their businesses sustain innovation and emerge even stronger in the future. Further, the session will respond to participants' specific questions regarding their innovation efforts during the challenging times ahead.

Ten Ways to Screw Up Your Voice of the Customer, 2 p.m. EDT, Sept. 17 - This Web cast will demonstrate how to identify common pitfalls in implementing Voice of the Customer studies so that development budgets are spent on the features and benefits that customers really want.

Overcoming Obstacles to Breakthrough Innovation, 2 p.m. EDT, Oct. 8 - Whirlpool has made great strides in the areas of innovation culture, leadership, customer centricity, knowledge management, performance metrics, incentive systems, pipeline management and front-end process. However, one of the remaining opportunities is in creating a more healthy long-term balance of incremental, distinctive and game-changing innovation.

The 10 Most Common (and Deadly) Innovation Traps, 2 p.m. EDT, Oct. 22 - This lively session, led by new product development guru Gerry Katz, will teach participants what innovation really is and what it is not, and demonstrate how to avoid these common mistakes teams often make in their innovation processes: misdefining innovation; lack of attention to process and best practices; ineffective incentive systems; choosing the wrong team; letting politics control the process; short-circuiting innovation; and choosing the wrong ideas for follow-up.

The PDMA is currently seeking content-based support from professionals within the new product development, management and innovation field to continue the Web cast series. Additionally, consultants and vendors interested in partnering with the PDMA in order to leverage the Association's database, network, and marketing power through a Web cast may do so under the terms of sponsorship.
