In 2006, RTD and Samtec began developing a next generation interconnection system that would ultimately become the PCIe/104(TM) Standard. Based on Samtec's Q2(TM) board-to-board connectors, the new stack would be proven by successfully transmitting PCI-Express© (Generation 1) through a test fixture which represented the most extreme PCIe/104(TM) requirements. It performed perfectly, and has become a popular format employed by many modern embedded system builders.
Today, Samtec and RTD have teamed up again to study the transmission of PCI Express© Gen 2 signals through the now-popular PCIe/104(TM) connector stack. The analysis confirmed that the current PCIe/104(TM) stacking design comfortably supports PCI Express© Gen 2 signaling. Further, the group looked ahead to consider PCI Express© Gen 3 transmission. They concluded again that the PCIe/104(TM) interconnect can successfully pass the demanding PCI Express© Gen 3 requirement, recommending the balance of the transmission path follow PCI-SIG© guidelines.
