MECHANICSBURG, Pa., July 1, 2010 - Universal Protective Packaging, Inc. (UPPI) has received an Energy Champion award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) for achieving more than 15% total energy savings and reporting the progress on schedule.
"We've always placed the highest priority on reducing our carbon footprint by promoting energy conservation of our equipment and minimizing our consumption of non-renewable resources," Rod Rumberger, President of UPPI, said, "This program is a great asset to our industry and our environment. We are honored to receive this award. "
The ITP awarded 151 plants, out of 500, for making significant progress in implementing the energy savings opportunities identified through a Save Energy Now energy assessment performed in 2009. Save Energy Now is a national initiative to reduce industrial energy intensity 25% or more in 10 years. In total, the award recipients achieved more than $32 million in cost savings and 4 trillion Btu in total energy savings.
UPPI worked with a university-based team to assess key industrial process systems and identify cost-saving opportunities. By implementing the recommended actions, UPPI is reducing the nation's energy use and shrinking the industrial carbon footprint in the near term.
