Accenture-Led Consortium Shows Benefits of Nationwide Network Are Within Reach of U.S. Citizens and Healthcare Community
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Jan. 29 -- Oracle today announced its role in the Accenture-led team that developed a fully integrated health information system prototype.
In November 2005, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as part of the Federal government's objective of creating a Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN), awarded a contract to Accenture to lead the development of a prototype network for secure information sharing among healthcare communities in West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, north-eastern Tennessee and south-western Virginia. This region has a wide variety of clinical systems among different provider organizations, much like the majority of providers in the United States.
The Accenture solution, which works with legacy clinical systems, is a significant step toward building an interoperable, standards-based network. Oracle has collaborated with Accenture to support the exchange of clinical data between three separate geographic markets and enable data analysis and reporting in support of the American Health Information Community (AHIC) Breakout Use Cases. OracleŽ products deployed in the initiative include Oracle Healthcare Transaction Base, Oracle Business Intelligence, Oracle Database, Oracle Application Server and Oracle BPEL Process Manager.
"The creation of regional prototypes, such as the one on which Oracle collaborated with Accenture, represent the first concrete steps toward the creation of the NHIN, which has the potential to transform healthcare in the United States," said Neil de Crescenzo, Group Vice President, Health Sciences, Oracle. "Interoperable and standards-based technologies are critical to realizing the vision and full potential of the NHIN. The solution that Accenture developed in cooperation with Oracle and the other members of the prototype team addresses both of these critical requirements. This same technology can also support smaller-scale integrated delivery systems and medical centers."
The Accenture prototype - which was designed around use cases relating to electronic medical records, consumer empowerment and biosurveillance - shows that patient data can be extracted from disparate information systems and converted to a common format and target terminology that enables information sharing between physician offices, medical laboratories, hospitals and other clinical settings - offering a 'single view' of a patient's medical information. This approach, which allows the industry to build on existing investments in legacy provider systems, enables rapid implementation of a secure infrastructure to facilitate data sharing and reuse.
