Open-E Unveils Enhancements to Its Data Storage Server (DSS) Product Line at CeBIT 2008

Pioneering leader of IP-based storage management software reveals several new feature updates, including Automatic Failover, NDMP and WORM-Technology

Hannover, Germany - March 6, 2008 - Open-E, a pioneering leader of IP-based storage management software, announced today at the 2008 CeBIT Global Conference and Exhibition, several new feature updates to its innovative Data Storage Server (DSS) software. These features are designed to enhance the data security and availability of its already robust DSS software platform.

New features include:

1) Automatic Failover increasing data availability through fault-tolerant systems

2) WORM (Write Once, Read Many) Technology optimizing the archiving of data

3) Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) accelerating back-up and restore capabilities

4) Language Packs in English, German, Russian and Japanese enabling end-users the ability to install and administer the system in the language of their choice

New Features: Improved data availability, security and flexibility.

This announcement unveils the fourth generation of Open-E's flagship offering, the DSS software line of products. The first of these four enhancements includes automatic failover using virtual IP addresses via the iSCSI protocol. This allows the user to automatically switch over to a secondary storage server in the event of a primary storage server failure or for scheduled maintenance.

The second of these new features for DSS is WORM-technology (Write Once, Read Many) which allows information to be written to a particular disk only once. The data can then be read many times without it being erased or modified. This is a particularly useful archiving feature for organizations such as government agencies or large enterprises looking to avoid inadvertent loss of data. SMBs will also find this to be a key asset when seeking to comply with government regulations around data retention.

The next feature enhancement adds Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) to the DSS. This is a standards-based protocol used to control data backup and recovery communications between primary and secondary storage in heterogeneous network environments. Open-E's NDMP implementation is supported by backup utilities including Symantec NetBackup, EMC Legato Networker, NDMP Client and Computer Associates Brightstor.

Lastly, the availability of English, German, Russian and Japanese language packs for DSS will give administrators the flexibility to utilize this product in their preferred language.

"The availability and security of data is of growing concern for companies of all sizes," said Krzysztof Franek, President and CEO of Open-E. "With these new features we are unveiling at CeBIT 2008, Open-E DSS allows companies, particularly SMBs, to cost-effectively enhance their data management capabilities with features that previously were available only to large enterprise customers at a very high cost. Automatic failover, WORM-technology and NDMP expand the range of features of our innovative DSS software significantly. Companies can deploy robust storage systems quickly, easily and in a more secure and highly available configuration than ever before - all at a very attractive cost-performance ratio. Our versatile solution is attractive not only to SMBs, but to departmental workgroups in large enterprises as well."

About Open-E's DSS

Open-E's DSS software provides a fast, reliable and scalable platform for IP storage and remains one of the easiest ways of implementing a NAS server and/or an iSCSI technology in a network. The DSS can be used with all x86 PCs containing USB ports, an IDE controller and an additional SATA controller on the main board or hardware controller.

DSS is built on Open-E's industry recognized NAS and iSCSI software technology which is noted for its performance, superior security, stability, and management advantages. With DSS, users can cost-effectively and quickly add storage to an existing network, consolidate storage and backups for multiple servers, centralize storage management with optimal performance and data protection, and improve data availability and efficiency. Additionally, DSS can support software RAID, so users can create software RAID over single hard drives or over existing hardware RAIDs.
