Omron Introduces Three New Inspection and Software Tools to Optimize PCB Production at IPC/APEX in Las Vegas

SCHAUMBURG, IL (March 13, 2009) - At IPC/APEX trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada, March 31 to April 2, Omron Electronics LLC (www.omron247.com) will introduce three new inspection and software tools to optimize printed circuit board production. Located at booth #1147, Omron will introduce the world's first automated dual mode in-line X-ray inspection system, a new high-speed in-line solder inspection system, and simplified programming software that operators can use to shorten inspection program generation time without requiring the skills of an expert programmer.

Omron's VT-X series, the world's first automated dual mode X-ray inspection system, combines highly accurate computed tomography (CT) scanning with high-speed Tomosynthesis scanning to shorten the tact time for in-line, post-solder inspection at production line speeds. Use of CT technology eliminates the shadowing from bottom side components while top side components are inspected. Because CT scanning technology alone can be quite slow such that inspections must be done off-line or handled slowly in-line, Omron's solution enables use of both technologies in the same inspection. By utilizing a combination of CT and Tomosynthesis scanning the VT-X shortens inspection time for 4 BGAs to 60 seconds, depending on specific board layout.

The new VT-S700 in-line AOI system is designed to improve soldered component inspection accuracy and increase throughput by shortening tact time with an expanded field of view. By using a telecentric lens with a 2-megapixel camera the VT-S700 reduces image distortion to increase accuracy of inspection at the edges of its large field of view. The system delivers high resolution inspection of up to 10 microns for components as small as 01005 chips.

The EzTS Easy Teaching Software for Omron's VT-RNS inspection systems (and VT-S700 in late 2009) shortens initial inspection program generation time and reduces labor costs by enabling operators to create and fine-tune inspection programs without the need for a highly-skilled programmer. Using a single bare PCB and just one good sample PCB, the software employs a setup wizard format for component color, fillet color, etc. to automatically generate the inspection criteria. This software simplifies programming making it easier to fine-tune the inspection programs to optimize first pass yields.
