WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) renewed its Alliance with the Brick Industry Association (BIA). The Alliance will focus on reducing ergonomic injuries and preventing exposure to hazardous levels of silica.
"Our Alliance has made significant contributions to improve the safety and health of employees," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. "OSHA is pleased to continue its joint efforts with BIA to develop resources that help reduce and prevent exposure to silica in the workplace."
Through the Alliance, BIA representatives serve on the editorial boards for OSHA's Safety and Health Topics pages that address brick industry hazards, such as Silica, Crystalline; Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout); Confined Spaces; Machine Guarding; and Heat Stress. In addition, a BIA and OSHA Alliance Web page has been posted on the association's Web site and includes links to compliance assistance and cooperative program resources. Furthermore, OSHA representatives presented information on exposure monitoring, control of dust, and OSHA compliance assistance resources on silica at BIA's Silicosis Prevention Seminar in February 2008.
"BIA is pleased to continue its collaborative work with OSHA so that brick industry employees are as well-protected as possible," said Joe Casper, vice president of environmental health and safety, Brick Industry of America. "OSHA's providing of speakers at BIA 'best practices' seminars, and editorial reviews of safety materials serve as significant boosts to the industry's safety programs. This kind of tangible assistance delivered by OSHA's collaborative efforts is very helpful to our employees and our industry."
BIA represents distributors and manufacturers of clay brick, and suppliers of brick masonry and related products and services. The association has developed a series of training bulletins on technical developments in brick masonry for architects, designers and builders. BIA publishes a monthly magazine, Brick News, and maintains a safety information section on its Web site.
